The Honey of Verse
Ānanda rañña ratanādi mahā yatinda,Niccappabuddha padumappiya sevinaṅgī;
Buddhappiyena ghana buddha guṇappiyena,Therālinā racita pajjamadhuṃ pibantu.
O joyful ones, jewels among kings, great ascetics, whose limbs serve the beloved lotuses of the Ever-Awakened One! May you drink the honey of verse composed by the Thera Buddhappiya, who delights in the profound virtues of the Buddha.

Uṇṇāpapuṇṇasasimaṇdalato galitvā,Pādambujaṅguli dalaṭṭha sudhā lavānaṃ;
Pantīva satthu nakhapanti pajāvisesaṃ,Pīṇetu suddha sukhitammaṇa tuṇḍapītā.
Like a row of nectar drops trickled from the splendid orb of the full moon and settled on the petals that are the toes of his lotus feet, may the row of the Teacher’s nails delight the people, being drunk by the beaks of a pure and happy mind.

Khittāya māraripunā parivatya satthu,Pādassayā jita disāya sitattalāya;
Yā jeti kañcana sarāvaliyā siriṃ sā,Detanginaṃ raṇajayaṅgulipantikantā.
The enemy Māra, having been thrown down by the Teacher, prostrates at his pair of feet, by which the directions were conquered and which have white soles. May that lovely row of toes, victorious in battle, which surpasses the splendor of a golden row of arrows, give delight to beings.

Sovaṇṇa vaṇṇa sukhumacchavi somma kumma,Piṭṭhīva piṭṭhi kamatunnati bhāti yesaṃ;
Tesuppatiṭṭhitasukomaladīghapaṇhi,Pādā jinassa padadantu padaṃ janassa.
Whose insteps, like the back of a gentle, golden-hued tortoise with delicate skin, shine with a beautiful arch; with well-established, very soft, and long heels—may those feet of the Conqueror grant the deathless state to the people.

Acchera paṅkajasiraṃ siriyā sakāya,Ye maddino viya caranti saroja sīse;
Sañcumbitā viya ca tāni parāga rāgā,Te nīrajā munipadā padadantu lakkhiṃ.
They that walk on the heads of lotuses, as if crushing a wondrous lotus with their own splendor, and as if kissed by the hue of its pollen—may those immaculate feet of the Sage bestow good fortune.

Agāmi kāla jana maṅgala bhattu bhāvaṃ,Vyākattumatra kusaleniva nimmitāni;
Yātrāsumaṭṭhasatamaṅgalakkhaṇāni,Sādhetu naṃ padayugaṃ jayamaṅgalāni.
As if created here by skill to declare his future state as a benefactor for the welfare of the people, the one hundred and eight auspicious marks adorn his soles. May that pair of feet accomplish victorious blessings.

Sassevijantuvarasantipurappavese,Niccaṃ susajja ṭhapitāniva maṅgalāya;
Ye te dadhanti kalamaṅgalalakkhaṇāni,Vattantu te jinapadā jayamaṅgalāya.
Like beautiful auspicious marks always well-adorned and placed for a blessing at the entrance to the excellent city of peace for all beings—may those feet of the Conqueror, which bear these signs, proceed for victorious blessings.

Sabbebhibhūya sapadesu nipātanassa,Saññāṇakaṃ viya yadassitasabbaloko;
Pādātyadhokatatilokasirovarā pi,Lokaṃ puṇantu jayamaṅgalakāraṇāni.
Like a sign of his having conquered all and subdued them in every region, a sign on which the whole world depends; though the excellent crowns of the three worlds are placed below them, may his feet, the cause of victorious blessings, purify the world.

Lokattayekasaraṇattavibhāvanāya,Sajjo va tiṭṭhati yahiṃ suvibhattaloko;
Taṃ sabbalokapaṭibimbitadappaṇābhaṃ,Pādadvayaṃ janasusajjanahetu hotu.
For revealing his nature as the one refuge for the three worlds, the well-portioned world stands as if ready. May that pair of feet, like a mirror reflecting the entire world, be a cause for the gladness of good people.

Lokuttarāya siriyādhigamāya suṭṭhu,Rajanti yattha diguṇāniva pātu bhūtā;
Cakkāsanābhisahanemisahassarāni,Tyaṅghī disantu sakalissariyaṃ janassa.
For the excellent attainment of supramundane splendor, there shine the wheels with their thousand spokes, hubs, and rims, having appeared as if doubled. May those feet grant complete sovereignty to the people.

Yatrullasanti duvidhāniva pātū bhūtā,Dhammassasabbabhuvanassa ca issaratte;
Cakkāni cakkasadisāni sudassanassa,Tānajja jantu saraṇā caraṇāni hontu.
Where the wheels, like the wheel of Sudassana, shine forth, having appeared as if twofold in sovereignty over the Dhamma and all the world—today may those feet be a refuge for all beings.

Sattesu vacchatu sirī sirivacchakena,Sovatthi sotthimanutiṭṭhatu puggalesu;
Nandiṃ janānamanuvattatu nandivattī,Sīsānalaṃkurutu pādavataṃsako pi.
By the sirivaccha mark, may fortune dwell in beings. May the svastika mark establish well-being for individuals. May the nandāvatta symbol attend the joy of the people. And may the foot-crest mark also adorn the head.

Bhaddāya pīṭhamupagacchatu bhaddapīṭhaṃ,Vuddhiṃ janānamanuvattatu vaddhamānaṃ;
Puṇṇattamaṅgimanukubbatu puṇṇakumbho,Pāti ca pātu satataṃ janataṃ apāyā.
May the auspicious-seat mark lead to a blessed seat. May the vaddhamāna mark attend the growth of the people. May the full-pot mark bring about a state of fullness for beings. And may the bowl mark always protect the people from the lower realms.

Setātapattamapanetamaghātape taṃ,Khaggo vichindatu sadā duritārivagge;
Saṃklesadāhamapanetu satālavaṇṭa,Saṃvījanī kumatimakkhikamorahattho.
May the white-parasol mark ward off the heat of defilements. May the sword mark always cut asunder the host of enemies that are misdeeds. May the palmyra-fan mark remove the burning of defilements. May the fly-whisk and the peacock-feather fan drive away the flies of wrong views.

Ākaḍḍhano janavilocanamattaninnaṃ,Vāretu sabbagativāranamaṅkuso so;
Pādambujassirivilāsaniketanaṃ va,Pāsādalakhaṇamupetu manopasādaṃ.
May that goad mark, which restrains all destinations, prevent the minds of people from being drawn towards low things. Like a home for the graceful play of the lotus feet’s splendor, may the palace mark bring confidence of mind.

Pāṇīnamattabhajataṃ varapuṇṇapattaṃ,Sammā dadātu padanissitapuṇṇapatto;
Pādesu jantu manabandhanadāmabhūtaṃ,Dāmaṃ dametu vimalaṃ janatammanāni.
May the full-vessel mark on his foot rightly give an excellent full vessel to those who partake according to the measure of their hands. May the stainless garland mark on his feet, which is like a rope binding the minds of beings, tame the minds of the people.

Uṇhīsakuppalamaṇīpadumehi pādā,Sassevijantukaraṇāni vibhūsayantu;
Sannettanāvupagatānamanagghakāni,Bojjhaṅgasattaratanāni dade samuddo.
May the feet, with the marks of the turban, blue lotus, jewel, and lotus, adorn the faculties of all beings. To those who have approached the ship of the good guide, may the ocean mark bestow the priceless seven jewels of the enlightenment factors.

Uttuṅga niccalaguṅā jitatāya niccaṃ,Sevīva pādasiri nicca samubbahaṃ va;
Atrāpi sakkabhavanubbahaṇe niyutto,Pādaṭṭhameru bhavataṃ bhavataṃ vibhūtyā.
Like a servant always bearing the splendor of the feet for victory with his lofty and immovable virtues, and engaged here in supporting the realm of Sakka, may the Meru mark on the foot be for your great prosperity.

So cakkavāḷasikharī pyavataṃ samantā,Sabbūpasaggavisarājanataṃ samaggaṃ;
Dīpā puthūpi caturo dvisahassa khuddā,Dhārentvapāyapatamānamadatva jantuṃ.
May the Cakkavāḷa-peak mark protect the people all around from the spreading of all troubles and keep them united. May the marks of the four great continents and the two thousand minor islands uphold beings, not allowing them to fall into the lower realms.

Sūro pabodhayatu jantu saroruhāni,Cando pasāda kumudāni manodahesu;
Nakkhattajātamakhilaṃ subhatāya hotu,Cakkaṃ dhajaṃ ripujayāya jayaddhajāya.
May the sun mark awaken the lotuses of beings. May the moon mark gladden the water lilies in the lakes of the mind. May the entire host of constellation marks be for good fortune. May the wheel and banner marks be for victory over enemies, for a banner of victory.

Jetuṃ sasaṃsada-sudassana-cakkavatti,Cakkānugantalalitaṃ yahimāvaheyya;
Cakkāṇuvatti parisāvata-cakkavatti,Naṃvattataṃ padayugaṃ janatā hitāya.
Just as the universal monarch Sudassana with his assembly would gracefully bring his attendant wheel to conquer, so may the mark of the universal monarch with his wheel-following assembly cause that pair of feet to proceed for the welfare of the people.

Pujetumāgata vatā vajirāsanaṭṭha,Mindena chaḍḍita mahāvijayuttarākhyaṃ;
Saṃkhaṃ paviṭṭhamiva mārabhayā padādho,Pādaṭṭhasaṃkhamiha vattatu santiyā vo.
Like the great conch named Vijayuttara, cast down by Indra who had come to pay homage to him seated on the diamond throne, and which then entered beneath his foot out of fear of Māra, may the conch mark on the foot here conduce to your peace.
22.
22.
Sovaṇṇamacchayugalaṃ sivabhatta bhoge,Icchā bahūpakaraṇaṃ bhavataṃ janānaṃ;
Kumbhīladhiggahitato va padutthacittā,Pādambujākara vigāhi tu nopahontu.
May the mark of the pair of golden fish grant auspicious food and enjoyments; may it be a great help for the wishes of the people. But may those of corrupt mind, as if seized by a crocodile, not be able to plunge into the mine that is his lotus feet.
23.

Sattāpagā janamanoja male jahantu,Saṃklesadāhamapanentu dahā ca satta;
Selā ca satta vidadhantu janassa tānaṃ,Lokappasiddhijanane bhavataṃ patākā.
May the marks of the seven rivers wash away the stains born of people’s minds. May the marks of the seven lakes remove the burning of defilements. May the marks of the seven mountains provide protection for the people. May the banner mark bring you renown in the world.
24.
24.
Pāṭaṅki santi gamane bhavatūpakārā,Dāhettanesu jahataṃ padacāmaraṃ taṃ;
Sallokalocanamahussava-ussitaṃ va,Vatteyya toraṇamanuttaramaṅgalāya.
May the palanquin mark be helpful for a peaceful journey. May that chowrie mark on the foot relieve the burning of the afflicted. Like a great festival raised for the eyes of good people, may the gateway mark conduce to unsurpassed blessings.
25.
25.
Yasmiṃ miginda gata bhīti balāva daḍḍha,Dānā natā siravidāraṇa pīḷitāva;
Nālāgirī karivaro girimekhalo ca,Taṃ sīhavikkamapadaṃ hanatā ghadantiṃ.
Before the stride of the king of beasts, the great elephants Nālāgiri and Girimekhala bowed down, their pride consumed by the power of fear, afflicted as if their heads were split. May that mark of the lion’s stride destroy the wickedness of beings.
26.
26.
Pāpāhino hanatu pādasuvaṇṇarājā,Vyagghādhipo kalijane adataṃ asesaṃ;
Vālāha-assapati sampatituṃ adatvā,Pāyesu pāpayatu santipurampajāyo.
May the mark of the golden goose king destroy evil serpents. May the mark of the tiger king completely tame the untamed people of the Kali age. May the mark of the cloud-horse king, not allowing them to fall, lead the people to the city of peace.
27.
27.
Chaddanta danti lalitaṃ galitaṃ rusamhā,Luddetta dubbhini dise acalaṃ dadhāno;
Pādaṭṭhahatthipati sampati jantutāse,Tāsetu hāsamaparandisataṃ satānaṃ.
May the mark of the lordly elephant Chaddanta, who gracefully remains unmoving with anger dispelled when assailed by a cruel hunter, now dispel the fear of beings and bring a smile to the faces of the good.
28.
28.
Sabbaṅgino caraṇuposatha hatthirājā,Pāpetu sabbacatudīpikarajjalakkhiṃ;
Kittīva pādaparicārikatā niyuttā,Kelasaselapaṭimā hitamācareyya.
May the mark of the Uposatha elephant king bring about the fortune of kingship over the four continents. May the mark of Mount Kelāsa, like fame itself appointed to the service of the feet, act for the welfare of all.
29.
29.
Sāmissa haṃsasamaye dahapāsabaddha,Māsīna vesagamako viya pādahaṃso;
Nigghosa gantijitato viya mūgapakkho,Yāretu sabba janatā bhavagantukattaṃ.
Like a royal goose caught in a firm snare, the mark of the goose on the foot, as if a mute bird whose journey is overcome by silence, may it prevent all people from journeying on in existence.
30.
30.
Ohāya dibbasarasiṃ khilaloka sabba,Rammaṅghivāpimavagāhitavāva pāde;
Erāvaṇo karivaro manasābhiruḷhe,Jantuṃ purindadapuraṃ nayataṃ va sīghaṃ.
Having abandoned its divine lake and the entire barren world, and plunged into the delightful pond of the Master’s feet, may the mark of the great elephant Erāvaṇa swiftly lead beings who have mentally mounted it to the city of Indra.
31.
31.
Hitvā sakambhavanamaṅghinisevanattha,Māgamma ramma taratāyiha nissito va;
Pāletva mūni padavāpitaraṅgabhaṅgi,Mangī karontatanuvāsuki nāgarājā.
Having abandoned his own realm to serve the feet, and having come here to take refuge with swift delight, may the Nāga king Vāsuki, making the breaking waves of the Sage's foot-pond his body, bring about well-being.
32.
32.
Nāthassa kañcanasikhāvalajātilīla,Māvikaraṃ va padanissitamorarājā;
Taṃ dhammadesanaraveniva luddakassa,Lokassa pāpaphaṇino hanataṃ asesaṃ.
May the mark of the peacock king on the foot, as if revealing the graceful beauty of the Lord’s golden top-knot, completely destroy the venomous snakes of evil for the world, with the sound of the Dhamma teaching acting as a hunter.
33.
33.
Saṃsārasāgaragate sadhane jane te,Netampade kalacatummukhahemanāvā;
Nibbāṇapaṭṭanavaraṃ bharukacchakantaṃ,Suppārapaṇḍita gatā viya āsunāvā.
For those people with resources who are adrift in the ocean of saṃsāra, may the mark of the beautiful, four-prowed golden ship on the foot quickly lead them to the excellent port of Nibbāna, just as the wise Suppāraka reached the beloved port of Bharukaccha.
34.
34.
Sambodhi ñāṇa paripācayato munissa,Bhatto yathā himavataddi samādhihetu;
Evammanena bhajataṃ himavaddipāde,Sambodhiñāṇa paripācanahetu hotu.
Just as the Himalaya mountain is a cause for the concentration of a sage who is ripening his enlightenment-knowledge, so too, for those who mentally resort to the Himalaya mark on the feet, may it be a cause for the ripening of enlightenment-knowledge.

Daḷhaṃ parājitatayā muninā sarena,Suññassaropagata pañjara bandhanova;
So pādapañjaragato karavīkapakkhī,Sabbesamappīyāvacañjahatā bhavantaṃ.
As if firmly defeated by the Sage's voice and bound in the cage of that sweet sound it had approached, may the Karavīka bird mark, now gone into the cage of the foot, cause all to abandon unpleasing speech.
36.
36.
Te cakkavāka makarā api koñca jīvaṃ,Jīvādi pakkhivisarā sarasīva bhuttaṃ;
Vessantarena caraṇambuji nibbhajantā,Jantu tahiṃ viya pade suramentu niccaṃ.
Just as flocks of birds—ruddy geese, makaras, cranes, jīvañjīvaka birds, and others—delight in a lake, so too may beings, partaking of the foot-lotuses as if a gift from Vessantara, always delight in the feet.
37.
37.
Taṃ candakinnaragatiṃva gatassa bodhi,Sattassa tassa sapajāpatikassa bhāvaṃ;
Saṃsūcayanta pada kinnara kinnarī ve,Sāmaggimagga paṭi pattisu pāpayantu.
May the marks of the kinnara and kinnarī on the foot, indicating the state of that Bodhisatta and his consort who possessed a gait like a moon-kinnara, lead beings to the attainment of the path of harmony.
38.
38.
Saṃrājadhānimusabho vahatagga bhāraṃ,Pītippayo pajanayeyya savacchadhenu;
Sassevino abhiramentu chakāmasaggā,Dhārentu jhāyimiha soḷasa dhātudhāmā.
May the bull, bearer of the chief burden of the capital, be for our welfare. May the cow with its calf produce the milk of joy. May the devotees delight in the six desire-realm heavens. May the sixteen Brahma-worlds support those who practice jhāna here.
39.
39.
Sutvā jinassa karavīka sarammanuññaṃ,Aññoñña bhītirahitā api paccanīkā;
Hitvā gatiṃ viya ṭhitā padasattarūpā,Sabbaṃ bhavassita janānagatiṃ hanantu.
Just as natural enemies, upon hearing the Conqueror’s lovely voice, sweet as a karavīka bird’s, stand still, having abandoned their ways and their mutual fear, so may the seven animal marks on the foot destroy every bad destination for beings attached to existence.
40.
40.
Sovaṇṇa kāhaḷa yugo pamamindirāya,Sannīrapuppha mukulopamamussavāya;
Niccaṃ susajja ṭhapitaṃ muni tiṭṭhatante,Jaṅghādvayaṃ janavilocana maṅgalāya.
Like a pair of golden trumpets for Indra, or like the buds of water lilies for a festival, may your pair of shins, O Sage, ever beautifully adorned, stand as a blessing for the eyes of the people.
41.
41.
Lakhyā vilāsa mukuradvaya sannikāsaṃ,Tāḍaṅka maṇḍana viḍambakamaṃsu saṇḍaṃ;
Jānudvayaṃ laḷita sāgara bubbalābhaṃ,Hotaṃ jagattaya nijatta vibhūsitunte.
Resembling a pair of mirrors for the graceful play of Splendor, with a mass of radiance that imitates the beauty of earrings, may your two knees, lovely as ocean bubbles, adorn the three worlds, making them your own.
42.
42.
Chaddanti dinna varadanta yugopamānā,Taṃ hatthi soṇḍa kama puṇṇa guṇā tavorū;
Līla payodhi siri keḷi suvaṇṇarambhā,Khandhāva dentu paripuṇṇa gune janānāṃ.
Comparable to the pair of excellent tusks given by the Chaddanta elephant, your thighs, full of virtues and graceful as an elephant's trunk, playful with the splendor of the ocean of grace, and like the trunks of golden plantain trees—may they bestow complete virtues upon the people.
43.
43.
Jaṅghakkha kadvya samappita cittapāda,Cakkadvayī manamanojahayo mune te;
Sonī ratho sirivaho manasā bhiruḷhaṃ,Lokattayaṃ sivapuraṃ lahu pāpayātu.
O Sage, your shanks are the twin axles, to which are fitted the pair of wheels that are your beautiful feet, drawn by horses swift as thought and born of the mind. May the splendid chariot of your hips, when mentally mounted, quickly convey the three worlds to the city of bliss.
44.

Rammora pākaṭa taṭāka taṭā savanta,Romāvalī jala panālika koṭikaṭṭhā;
Nābhī gabhīra sarasī siri keḷitā te,Sassevinaṃ vyasana ghammamalaṃ sametu.
Flowing from the bank of the manifest lake of your delightful chest, the line of your body hair stands like the tip of a water spout. Your deep navel is a splendid, playful lake. May it appease the distress, heat, and defilement of those who serve you.

Kanticchaṭā luḷita rūpa payodhi nābhi,Āvaṭṭa vaṭṭita nimujjita sabbaloko;
Sobhagga toya nivahaṃ visaso pivitvā,Lokuttarādi sukha mucchitataṃ payātu.
Your navel is a whirlpool in the ocean of beauty, stirred by a mass of radiance, in which the entire world is spun and submerged. Having drunk deeply from the flood of its graceful waters, may the world attain a state of rapture in supramundane and other bliss.
46.
46.
Gambhīra cittarahadaṃ paripūrayitvā,Taṃ sandamāna karuṇambu pavāha tulyā;
Romālivallihari nābhi subhālavālā,Detaṃ lahuṃ sivaphalaṃ bhajataṃ mune te.
O Sage, having filled the deep lake of the mind, your lovely creeper of body hair, with its beautiful basin at the navel, flows like a stream of compassionate water. May it swiftly grant the fruit of bliss to those who revere you.
47.

Cārūra sāriphalako kuṭilagga loma,Pantī vibhatti sahito siri keḷi sajjo;
Saggāpavagga sukha jūtaka keḷi hetu,Hotaṃ tiloka sukha jūtaka soṇḍakānaṃ.
Your beautiful hips, like boards of heartwood, adorned with rows of hairs curled at the tip, are prepared for the play of splendor. A gaming board for the bliss of heaven and liberation, may they be so for those devoted to the game of seeking the bliss of the three worlds.
48.
48.
Gambhīra citta rahado dara gāhamāna,Mettādayā kari vadhū kara sanni kāsā;
Sabbaṅginaṃ sivaphalaṃ tanu deva rukkhe,Sākhā sakhā tava bhujā bhajataṃ dadantu.
O you whose deep mind-lake is hard to fathom, your arms resemble the trunks of a female elephant of loving-kindness and compassion. May your arms, which are friendly branches on the divine tree of your body, give the fruit of bliss to those who revere them.

Nihāra bindu sahitaggadalopa sobhi,Byālamba ratta padumadvaya bhaṅgi bhājā;
Pāpārisīsalunateniva ratta rattā,Rattā karā tava bhavumbhuvi maṅgalāya.
Shining like the tips of petals adorned with dewdrops, possessing the grace of a pair of pendant red lotuses, exceedingly red as if from severing the heads of the enemies that are evils—may your red hands bring auspiciousness to the world.

Rupassirī carita caṅkama vibbhamā te,Piṭṭhī yathā kalala muddhani setu bhūtā;
Evaṃ bhavaṇṇava samuttaraṇāya setu,Hotammahākanaka saṃkama sannikāsā.
Just as your back, possessing the splendor of form and the grace of conduct and movement, is a bridge over the mire, so too, resembling a great golden causeway, may it be a bridge for crossing the ocean of existence.

Saddhamma desana manohara bherināda,Saṃcāraṇe sivapuraṃ visituṃ janānaṃ;
Gīvā suvaṇṇamaya cāru mutiṅga bheri,Bhāvambhajā bhavatu bhūta vibhūtiyā te.
For the journey of the people to visit the city of bliss, may your neck, with the delightful drum-sound of the teaching of the true Dhamma, become a beautiful golden mṛdaṅga drum. May it be for the prosperity and glory of all beings.
52.

Lakhī nivāsa vadanambuja matta ninna,Mākaḍḍhayaṃ jana vilocana cañcarīke;
Sorabbha dhamma makaranda nisandamānaṃ,Piṇetu tena sarasena sabhā jane te.
May your lotus-face, the abode of splendor, slightly concave, which attracts the bees of people's eyes and exudes the fragrant nectar of the Dhamma—may it please the people in the assembly with its sweet essence.

Lakhī samāruhita vattarathe rathaṅga,Dvandānu kāri miga rāja kapola līlaṃ;
Tādaṅka maṇḍalayugaṃ viya kaṇṇabhājaṃ,Gaṇḍatthaladvyamalaṃkurutaṃ janatte.
Imitating the twin wheels of a round chariot mounted by Splendor, possessing the grace of a lion's cheeks, and like a pair of circular earrings adorning the ears, may your pair of cheeks adorn the people.
54.

Lāvaṇṇa maṇṇava pavāḷa latā dvayābhaṃ,Tandeha deva taru pallava kante mantaṃ;
Vattāravinda makaranda parājisobhaṃ,Rattādharadvayamadho kurutaṃ janāghaṃ.

Gattuttararaṇṇava gatā tava jantukānaṃ,Hotaṃ bhavaṇṇava samuttaranaya nātha.
O Lord, for the beings who have entered the great ocean of your form, may the coral-ship of your lips—adorned with beautiful eyebrows, with your nose as its mast, and the uṇṇā-curl as the bird on its masthead—serve to cross the ocean of existence.

Isaṃ vikāsa padumodara kesarāli,Līlā vinaddha rucirā tava danta panti;
Vānī vadhū dharita mālati mālya tulyā,Tassaṃ jānassa manarañjana mācareyya.
Your beautiful row of teeth, gracefully arranged, has the charm of a line of filaments in a slightly blooming lotus. Like a jasmine garland held by the maiden Speech, may it bring delight to the mind of the wise.

Saddhamma nijjhara suratta silātalābhā,Jivhā vacī naṭa vadhū kala raṅga bhūtā;
Saddhamma seṭṭha taraṇī nihitappiyā te,Saṃsāra sāgara samuttaraṇāya hotu.
Your tongue has the splendor of a well-reddened stone slab in the stream of the true Dhamma; it is the beautiful stage for the actress that is your speech. May your tongue, that excellent and beloved boat of the true Dhamma, serve for crossing the ocean of saṃsāra.

Dantaṃsu kañcukīta rattadharo padhāne,Jivhā suratta sayane mukha mandiraṭṭhe;
Āmokkha mutti vadhuyā sayitāya tuyhaṃ,Kubbantu saṃgama malaṃ jana sotu kāmi.
In the mansion of your mouth, upon the very red couch of your tongue, may your red lips, as if a pillow, veiled by the bodice of your teeth's rays, and like a sleeping bride of release and liberation, bring about a union and remove the defilements of those who wish to hear.

Uṇṇā tathābhinava patta varābhi rāmā,Līlollasanta bhamukadvaya nīla pattā;
Ghānoru cāru kadalī vadanā lavālā,Tuyhaṃ pavattatu ciraṃ jana maṅgalāya.
Your delightful ūrṇā is like a fresh, excellent leaf; your pair of eyebrows shine playfully like blue petals; your great, beautiful nose is like a plantain tree with your face as its basin. May these of yours long be for the auspiciousness of the people.

Bālatthalī hari silātala piṭṭhikaṭṭha,Bhūvallaridvaya mayūra yugassa tuyhaṃ;
Pañcappabhā rucira piccha yugassirīkaṃ,Nettadvayaṃ manasi puñchatu pāpadhūliṃ.
Your forehead is like a polished stone slab, the perch for the pair of peacocks that are your twin eyebrow-creepers. May your pair of eyes, possessing the splendor of a pair of beautiful, five-colored feathers, wipe away the dust of evil from the mind.

Indīvarāntagata bhiṅgika panti bhaṅgi,Pañambujassaratate viya gacchapantī;
Nettambujassiri tirokaraṇīva tuyhaṃ,Pamhāvalī sirigateha tiro karontu.
Gracefully like a row of bees at the edge of a blue lotus, and like a row of trees on the bank of a lotus lake, may your row of eyelashes, like a curtain for the splendor of your lotus-eyes, splendidly veil them.

Vattullasambuja vilocana haṃsa tuṇḍa,Kañjaṃsu piñjara mulāla latā dvyābhaṃ;
Dolādvayaṃva savaṇadvyamatta lakkhyā,Hotaṃ tavajja janatā maticārahetu.
Your pair of ears, like a pair of lotus-stalk creepers tawny with the rays of the lotus, are like two swings for splendor. May they be today a cause for captivating the minds of the people.

Vammīka matthaka sayānaka bhūridatta,Bhoginda bhogavali vibbhamamā vahanti;
Ghānopariṭṭhitamune tava tuṇṇamuṇṇā,Taggāhino viya janassa dadātu vittaṃ.
O Sage, your ūrṇā, situated above your nose, bearing the illusion of the coils of the serpent king, like the Nāga king Bhūridatta lying atop an anthill, may it bestow wealth upon the people, as if seizing it for them.

Rūpindirāya vijaye khila loka rūpaṃ,Ghāṇoru cāru parighopari baddha siddhā;
Nīlābha vāta viluthanta vayaddhajābhā,Tiṭṭhantu sajja duritāri jayāya te bhū.
For victory in the contest for the queen of beauty over the forms of the entire world, may your eyebrows stand ready. Bound and perfected above the beautiful cross-bar of your great nose, with the splendor of a blue-black victory banner tossed by the wind, may they stand ready today for victory over the enemies of evil.

Uṇṇassitopala nivesita bunda sandhi,Ghāṇoru piṇḍakamaghā tapa rundhitunte;
Hotammukhambuja sirī sirasussitābhaṃ,Bhū nīla paṭṭika lalāta suvaṇṇa chattaṃ.
May the golden parasol of your forehead, with the blue band of your eyebrows—its jeweled handle resting on the ūrṇā, its base set at the junction of your great nose, obstructing the sun's heat, and possessing the splendor of being raised high over the glory of your lotus-face—bring prosperity.

Rupaṅka vedana vilocana bāna diṭṭhī,Dhārā nisāna maṇivaṭṭa sirī siro te;
Siddhā matosadha katañjana puñja lakkhī,Hotaṃ janassa nayanāmaya nāsanāya.
Your head has the splendor of a circle of jewels, a whetstone for the edge of the arrow of your gaze that pierces the mark of form. Possessing the fortune of a heap of prepared collyrium, a perfected deathless medicine, may it be for the destruction of the eye-diseases of the people.

Sakkhandha bāhuyuga torana majjha gīvā,Dharappitassirighato pari mussavāya;
Nīluppalāva ṭhapitā savibhatti kante,Kesā bhavantu bhuvanattaya maṅgalāya.
Your neck is in the middle of the arched gateway formed by your shoulders and arms, above which rests the auspicious pot of your head. Upon it, your lovely, distinctly parted tresses are arranged like blue lotuses. May they be for the auspiciousness of the three worlds.

Hemagghiye ṭhapita nīla silā kapāle,Pajjota jāla lalitaṃ muni sārayantī;
Rūpassirī sirasi bhūsita hema mālā,Kārā karotu subhagaṃ tava ketu mālā.
May your garland of rays—like a blue stone bowl on a golden stand, graceful with a net of light, reminding the Sage, and like a golden garland adorning the splendor of form on your head—make you fortunate.

Bhyāmappabhāli tava kañcana mora kāle,Surodaye vitata candaka cakkalakkhī;
Meghāvanaddha sikharunnata hema selā,Yantindacāpa vikatīva dadātu sobhaṃ.
May your fathom-long radiance, which has the splendor of the spread-out eye of a golden peacock's feather at sunrise, bestow beauty, like the display of Indra's bow over a high-peaked golden mountain shrouded in clouds.

Paṭṭhāya te paṇidhito suci dāna sīla,Nekkhamma pañña viriyakkhama saccadhiṭṭhā;
Mettā upekkhiti ime dasa pūratova,Pūrentu pārami guṇā janatānamatte.
Beginning from your aspiration, you fulfilled the ten perfections: generosity, virtue, renunciation, wisdom, energy, patience, truth, determination, loving-kindness, and equanimity. May these qualities of perfection now be fulfilled in the people for their own sake.

Pattuttaruttaradasā paṇidhāna bījā,Cetoradharāya karuṇā jala sekha vuddhā;
Sabbaññu ñāṇa phaladā sati vāṭa guttā,Taṃ samphalandisatu pāramitā latā te.
The seeds of your aspiration, reaching ever higher states, were sown in the ground of your heart and nurtured by the water of compassion. Protected by the fence of mindfulness and yielding the fruit of omniscient knowledge, may that creeper of your perfections now bear fruit for all.

Ābodhi puṇṇami padiṭṭha dinādito te,Sambhāra kāla sita pakkha kamābhi vuddho;
Sampuṇṇa pārami guṇāmataraṃsi taṃva,Sabbaṅgi kunda kumudāni pabodhayeyya.
Beginning from the day of your aspiration, you grew through the time of your accumulations like the waxing moon in the bright fortnight, until the full moon of Awakening. May the ambrosial rays of your perfected qualities now cause the jasmine and lotuses of all beings to blossom.

Āpacchimabbhava sivapphala lābha dānā,Dānappabandhamapidāna phalappabhandaṃ;
Saṃvaḍḍhayi tvaṃ abhipatthanato yathevaṃ,Jantuttaruttara phalaṃ khalu sambhunantu.
Just as you, from your first aspiration, cultivated the continuous practice of giving and the continuous fruit of giving, which culminates in the gain of the blissful fruit of the final existence, so too may beings now enjoy successively higher fruits.

Ārambhatoppabhuti yāva tavaggamaggā,Vikkhālita ghakalusaṃ suci sīla toyaṃ;
Mettā dayā madhura sītalatāyupetaṃ,Sodhetu tvaṃva bhava nissita jantu metaṃ.
From the very beginning until your supreme path, may the pure water of your virtue—which has washed away sin and stain, and is endowed with the sweet coolness of loving-kindness and compassion—purify, in the same way, these beings who are dependent on existence.

Āpaccimattamabhinikkhamanābhiyogā,Paṭṭhāya tampabhavato paripuṇṇa gehā;
Tvaṃ sabba jāti gahato api nikkhamittho,Evaṃ janā bhava dukhā khalu nikkhamantu.
Just as you, beginning from your application to renunciation in that existence, went forth from a full household and escaped from the prison of every birth up to your very last life, so too may people now go forth from the suffering of existence.

Ekaggato pala tale nisitā cirandhi,Dhārā sucittu sutale sati daṇḍa baddhe;
Nibbijjhi lakkhaṇa dhanuṭṭhiti santi lakkhaṃ,Khittā tayonamanu vijjhatu jantu khittā.
The arrow of your wisdom, bound to the shaft of mindfulness and sharpened on the stone of one-pointedness, was released from the bow of your meditative stance on the good ground of a pure mind. Just as it pierced the target of peace, so may the arrow released by you now pierce the target for all beings.

Tvaṃ pāramī jala nidhiṃ caturiha bāhu,Sattīhi suttari ciraṃ janakova sindhuṃ;
Sampanna vikkama phalosi yathā casova,Evaṃ janā viriyatapphalame dhayantu.
Just as you, like King Mahājanaka, crossed the ocean of perfections over a long time with the arm-strength of your fourfold striving and obtained the fruit of your heroic effort, so too may people now cause the fruit of their own energy to grow.

Satta paradha dahanesu ciraṃ sudhantaṃ,Khantī suvaṇṇa kata rūpa samantimattā;
Sabbā parādhamasahi tvaṃasayhamevaṃ,Sabbe janāpi khamanena bhajantu santiṃ.
Your patience, like gold well-smelted for a long time in the fires of others' offenses, became like perfectly wrought gold. Just as you endured all offenses, even the unendurable, so may all people attain peace through forbearance.

Lakkhādhikaṃ catura saṃkhiya kappa kālaṃ,Saccena suṭṭhu paribhāvita vācino te;
Vācāya sacca phusitāya samenti jantu,Evaṃ visuddha vacanā janatā bhavantu.
For four incalculable and a hundred thousand aeons, your speech was well-imbued with truth. Just as beings are pacified by speech that is touched by truth, so may the people become pure in their speech.

Ādinna dhamma mahiyatthira suppatiṭṭhā,Dhiṭṭhāna pārami mahā vajiraddi tuyhaṃ;
Sattena kena pi yathāhi abhejja nejjo,Evaṃ janāpi kusalesu adhiṭṭha hantu.
Just as your perfection of determination, a great diamond-like power, was firmly and steadily established on the earth of noble conduct, unbreakable and unshakeable by any being whatsoever, so too may the people be resolute in what is wholesome.

Tvaṃ sabba satta cirabhāvita metta citta,Toyehi saṃsamita kodha mahā hutāso;
Lokuttaraṃ taditaraṃ hitamāvahittho,Evaṃ janesu janatā hitamāvahantū.
With the waters of a mind long-cultivated in loving-kindness toward all beings, you have extinguished the great fire of anger. You have brought about supramundane and other welfare; thus may the people bring welfare to the populace.

Mittopakāra paṭipakkha janāpakāre,Tvaṃ nibbikāra manaso cirabhāvanāya;
Pattosilābha pabhutaṭṭusu nibbikāraṃ,Evaṃ janānunaya kopa nudā bhavantu.
Towards helpful friends and harmful foes, your mind remains unperturbed through long cultivation. You have attained an unperturbed state amidst the eight worldly conditions, beginning with gain. Thus may fawning and anger towards people be dispelled.

Sampanna hetu vibhavo tusite vimānaṃ,Yuttaṃ guṇehi navabhippadavī vimānaṃ;
Tvaṃ vādhiparamidhirohiniyā tiloko,Ārohatu bhaya sukhaṃ padavī vimānaṃ.
Endowed with causes and glory is the mansion in Tusita, a celestial palace endowed with the nine supramundane states. You, the supreme speaker, are a ladder for the three worlds; may the world ascend by it to the fearless and blissful mansion of the path.

Tvaṃverahaṃsi samabujjhi yathāca sammā,Sampanna vijja caraṇo sugatosi hontu;
Lokaṃ vido purisadammasusārathī si,Satthāsi bujjhi bhagavā si tatheva jantu.
You are indeed an Arahant and have perfectly understood things as they are. You are endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone One; may beings become so! You are the knower of the world, the unsurpassed charioteer of persons to be tamed. You are the Teacher, the Awakened One, the Blessed One; so too may beings awaken!

Saccitta bhū nidahitaṃ janatāya tuyhaṃ,Kalyāṇavaṇṇaratanaṇṇavajātibhinnaṃ;
Dukkhaggi cora jalupaddutajāti gehe,Tassā sukhaṃ bhavatu jīvitumāpadāya.
Your good mind is a treasure laid down for the people, a treasure of a different kind from an ocean of beautiful, lustrous jewels. In the house of existence, afflicted by the fire of suffering, thieves, and floods, may there be happiness for the people to live free from misfortune.

Vācā vicitta vara tantu gataṅgi kaṇṭhe,Svā mutta sagguṇa mahā ratanā valī te;
Vevaṇṇi yattani bhavaṃ sakalampahāya,Hotañjanassa siri saṅgama maṅgalāya.
Your speech is like a garland on your neck, strung with varied and excellent threads. It is your garland of pearls, good qualities, and great jewels. Having abandoned all existence and self-disparagement, may it be for the fortune, auspiciousness, and assembly of the people.

Taṃ sagguṇatthava dahaṭṭha sutippanāli,Nissandamāna guṇanīra nipāna tinte;
Khettetta saññini janā kata loma haṃsa,Bījaṅkurī kusala sassa phalaṃ labhantu.
From the firm channel of scripture which is the praise of your good qualities, and moistened by the watering-place of the flowing water of your virtue, may people of faith in this field, their hair bristling with joy, obtain the fruit of the crop of merit sprouting from the seed.

Āpāyikappabhuti dukkha nidāgha kāla,Santāpitā nikhila loka mano kadambā;
Taṃ vaṅṇa megha phusanā hasanaṅkurehi,Iddhā bhavantu mati vallari vellītā te.
Scorched by the summer season of suffering that originates from the planes of misery, the minds of the entire world are like tormented kadamba flowers. By the touch of the cloud of your praise, with its sprouts of joy, may their intellect-creepers, entwined with tendrils, thrive and prosper.

Hetuddasā phaladasā samavaṭṭhitaṃ taṃ,Sabbattha satta hitamāvahaṇena siddhaṃ;
Cintāpathātiganubhāva vibhāvanante,Bhūtānamatthu caritabbhutamattha sidhyā.
Showing the cause and yielding the fruit, it is well-established, accomplished by bringing welfare to all beings everywhere. Its power transcends the path of thought; by the manifestation of its wonder, may beings attain the accomplishment of their goal through its wondrous practice.

Aṅgārakāsumabhilaṅghiya dāna kāle,Bhattattano pada paṭicchaka paṅkajā ca;
Yātakkhaṇe tava pade dhaṭamuṭṭhahitvā,Paṅkeruhāṃ siva madhuṃ sarataṃ dadantu.
Just as you crossed a pit of embers at the time of giving, and just as lotuses sprang up to receive your feet, so too at the moment of their departure, having bowed their heads at your feet, may the lotuses grant them auspicious and memorable nectar.

Saccena maccha pati vassita vassadhārā,Satte dayāya tava vassita vassadhārā;
Gimhe janassa samayiṃsu yathā tathātā,Dhamambuvuṭṭhiva samentu kilesa dāhe.
Just as streams of rain were made to fall by the fish-king's act of truth, and streams of rain were made to fall on beings by your compassion, quenching the people's heat in summer, so too may the downpour of the water of Dhamma quench the burning of the defilements.

Chaddanta nāga patinā khamatā parādhaṃ,Chetvā kare ṭhapita dantavarāva luddaṃ;
Loke hitāya ṭhapitā tava danta dhātu,Seṭṭhā janaṃ siva puraṃ lahu pāpayantu.
Just as the elephant king Chaddanta, forgiving the offense, gave his excellent tusks to the hunter, so your most excellent tooth-relic has been established for the welfare of the world. May it quickly lead people to the city of bliss.

Taṃ temiyākhya yatinossama mālakamhi,Okiṇṇa mutta kanakā vuja vippakiṇṇā;
Kāruñña vārida cuto daka bindu bandhū,Dhātu samentu tava jantusu dukkhadāhe.
Just as the hermitage compound of the ascetic Temiya was strewn with scattered pearls and gold, so may your relic, a kinsman to beings like a drop of water fallen from a cloud of compassion, quench the burning of suffering in them.

Raṭṭhassa attha caraṇāya asammukhassa,Rāmena dinna tiṇa saṃkhata pādukāva;
Bhuttā tayā ciramasammukha nāgatassa,Lokassa atthamanu tiṭṭhatu patta dhātu.
Just as the grass sandals given by Rāma were for the welfare of the kingdom in his absence, so may the bowl-relic used by you endure for a long time for the welfare of the world in your absence.

Vutto janānamupadissa varāha raññā,Satthiṃ sahassa saradaṃ viya ñāya dhammo;
Ādeyya heyyamupadissa tayā pavutto,Dhammo pavattatu ciraṃ janatā hitāya.
Just as the righteous Dhamma was taught for sixty thousand years by the Boar King, instructing the people, so may the Dhamma proclaimed by you, instructing what is to be adopted and what is to be rejected, prevail for a long time for the welfare of the people.

Mārāri maddana hitādhigamaṃ karotā,Bhatto tayā vara mahā jaya bodhi rājā;
Saggā pavavagga hitahetu janassa hantvā,Sabbantarāyamiha tiṭṭhatu suṭṭhu sajjo.
O crusher of the enemy Māra, who brings about the attainment of welfare! The excellent, great, victorious Bodhi Tree was honored by you. Having destroyed all obstacles for the people for the sake of their welfare in heaven and liberation, may it stand here ever ready.

Sāmoda vaṇṇa bhajanī guṇa mañjarīyaṃ,Cariyā latā vikasitā tava sapphalaṅgaṃ;
Okiṇṇa citta madhupe rasa pīṇayanti,Sambhāvitā bhuvi pavattatu matthakehi.
Your creeper of conduct has blossomed, fragrant, beautiful, a cluster of virtues with limbs of good fruit. Delighting the bees of the mind that are filled with its nectar, may it, being honored, spread across the earth and be received with bowed heads.

Sambuddha selavalayantara jānanavhā,Nottattato tipathagā yati sāgaraṭṭhā;
Dhammā pagā suti vase tarite puṇanti,Sambhāra sassamiha vattatu pacayanti.
The river of Dhamma, proclaimed by the Sambuddha from within the circle of mountains, stands like the ocean and flows on three paths; it purifies those who cross over by means of hearing. May the crop of accumulations ripen and increase here.

Paññāṇa kūpa sita paggaha vāyu gāhī,Saddhā lakāra sahitā sati pota vāhā;
Sampāpayātu bhava sāgara pāra tīra,Sappattanaṃ varadhane pati patti nāvā.
May the ship of practice—with the mast of wisdom bound fast to catch the wind of exertion, with faith as its adornment and mindfulness as its pilot—convey beings to the further shore of the ocean of existence, to the safe haven with its excellent treasure.

Bojjhaṅga satta ratanākara dhamma khandha,Gambhīra nīra caya sāsana sāgaro saṃ;
So sīlyananta tanu veṭitha ñāṇa mantha,Selena manthitavataṃ disatā mataṃ ve.
The ocean of the Teaching is a deep mass of water, a mine of the seven jewels of the enlightenment factors and the aggregates of Dhamma. With endless virtue as the serpent-rope and the mountain of wisdom as the churning stick, may it indeed yield the deathless nectar to those who churn it.

Vuttena tena vidhinā vidhinā tato taṃ,Laddhā nubhūtamamataṃ khila dosa nāsaṃ;
Accanta roga jaratā maraṇā bhi bhūtaṃ,Bhūtaṃ karotu amaraṃ ajaraṃ arogaṃ.
By that declared method, having obtained and experienced that deathless state which destroys all barrenness and faults and has completely overcome sickness, aging, and death, may one make a being immortal, ageless, and free from disease.

Saddhamma rāja raviniggata dhammaraṃsi,Phullo dhutaṅgadala saṃvara kesarāli;
Saṅghāravinda nikaro samadhuṃ samādhi,Sakkiṇṇiko disatu sāsana vāpi jato.
May the lotus-group of the Sangha, born in the pond of the Teaching, blossom, stimulated by the Dhamma-rays from the sun of the Dhamma-King. Its petals are the ascetic practices, its filaments are restraint, and its honey is concentration.

Ānanda rañña ratanādi mahā yatinda,Niccappabuddha padumappiya sevinaṅgī;
Buddhappiyena ghana buddha guṇappiyena,Therālinā racita pajjamadhuṃ pibantu.
May they drink the honey of this verse composed by the elder who is dear to the Buddha and dear to the Buddha's profound virtues—the great lord of ascetics, Ānanda Araññaratana, ever-awakened, whose very form serves the Lotus-like One.

Itthaṃ rūpa guṇānukittanavasā taṃ taṃ hitā siṃ sato,Vatthānussati vattita iha yathā sattesu mettā ca me;
Evaṃ tābhi bhavanta ruttara tarā vattantu tā bodhi me,Saṃyogoca dhanehi santihi bhave kalyāna mittehi ca.
Thus, by the power of this praise of such qualities, and by wishing for the welfare of every mindful person, by this recollection of the stories composed here, and by my loving-kindness towards beings, may I cross over the perils of existence, and may these things conduce to my enlightenment. And in future lives, may I have association with true wealth, with peace, and with good friends.
