The Lotus Salutation
1.
1.
Kamalāsana kamalāpati pamathādhipa vajirā,Yudhadānava manujoraga bhujagāsana patinaṃ;
Makuṭāhita manidīdhiti bhamarāvali bhajitaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ anaghaṃ muni caraṇāmala kamalaṃ.
I bow to the immaculate lotus feet of the faultless Sage—lotus-seated, lord of lotuses, lord of Pramathas, the thunderbolt-wielder, subduer in battle of dānavas, of nāgas among men, and of the lord of the serpent throne; feet radiant with the light of gems on crowns and frequented by swarms of bees.
2.
2.
Kamalālaya sadi’saṅkita kalamaṅgala ruciraṃ,Jutirañjitaṃ abhinijjita subhakañcana nalinaṃ;
Janitā cira samaye nija pitu bhūpati namitaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ anaghaṃ muni caraṇāmala kamalaṃ.
I bow to the immaculate lotus feet of the faultless Sage—feet that resemble a lotus abode, are marked with auspicious signs, are beautiful, delightful, and radiant, surpassing a lovely golden lotus; feet of one born long ago, who was honored by his own father, the king.
3.
3.
Saraṇāgata rajanīpati dinasekhara namitaṃ,Bhajitākhila janapāvanaṃ abhikaṅkhita sukhadaṃ;
Vasudhātala sayamuggata sarasīruha mahitaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ anaghaṃ muni caraṇāmala kamalaṃ.
I bow to the immaculate lotus feet of the faultless Sage—feet revered by those who have come for refuge, by the lord of the night and the crest of the day; feet that save all who resort to them, that grant the happiness longed for, and that are honored like a lotus self-arisen from the earth's surface.
4.
4.
Diradāsana tarupantika ghaṭitāsanaṃ abhayaṃ,Vijayāsana samadhiṭṭhita caturaṅgika viriyaṃ;
Dharamānaka suriyehani vijitantaka dhajiniṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ abhipātita namuciddhaja vibhavaṃ.
I bow to the glory that overthrew the banner of Namuci: a fearless seat established beside a tree, the four-limbed energy established on the seat of victory, a banner that conquered Death, dispelling darkness like the sun.
5.
5.
Sadayodita piyabhārati vijitantaka samaraṃ,Dasapārami balakampita sadharādhara dharaniṃ;
Girimekhala varavārana sirasānata caraṇaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ abhinandita sanarāmara bhuvanaṃ.
I bow to his feet, praised by the world of humans and gods—feet of one whose lovely speech is uttered with compassion, who was victorious in the battle against Māra, whose power from the ten perfections shook the earth with its mountains, and to whom the noble elephant Girimekhala bowed its head.
6.
6.
Nikhilāsava vigame’nativimalīkata hadayaṃ,Tadanantara viditākhila matigocara visayaṃ;
Visayīkata bhuvanattayaṃ atilokiya caritaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ aparājitaṃ arahaṃ muniṃ asamaṃ.
I bow to the incomparable, undefeated Arahant, the Sage, whose heart was utterly purified with the cessation of all taints; who thereupon understood all objects within the range of thought; and whose supramundane conduct has encompassed the three worlds.
7.
7.
Mudubhārati madhupāsita nalinopama vadanaṃ,Rucirāyata nalinīdala nibha locana yugalaṃ;
Udayodita ravimaṇḍala jalitāmala niṭilaṃ,Paṇamā’maha akutobhayaṃ anaghaṃ muni pamukhaṃ.
I bow to the fearless, faultless chief of sages, he of gentle speech, whose face is like a honey-smeared lotus; whose pair of beautiful, long eyes resembles lotus petals; and whose pure forehead shines like the orb of the rising sun.
8.
8.
Asitambuda rucikuñcita mudu kuntala lalitaṃ,Bhuvanodara vitatāmita jutisañcaya jalitaṃ;
Madamodita diradopama gativibbhama ruciraṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ amatandada munipuṅgavaṃ asamaṃ.
I bow to the incomparable bull among sages, the giver of the deathless, whose soft, curly locks are lovely with their dark-cloud hue; whose immeasurable mass of radiance shines, spreading through the world's expanse; and whose delightful, graceful gait is like that of a joyous elephant in rut.
9.
9.
Karuṇārasa paribhāvita savaṇāmata vacanaṃ,Virudāvali sataghosita yasapūrita bhuvanaṃ;
Sumanohara varalakkhaṇa sirisañcaya sadanaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ uditāmala sasimaṇḍala vadanaṃ.
I bow to him whose face is radiant and pure like the risen orb of the moon; whose speech is nectar for the ear, imbued with the essence of compassion; whose glory, proclaimed by hundreds of garlands of praise, fills the world; and who is himself an abode for the fortune of the most lovely, excellent marks.
10.
10.
Vinayāraha janamānasa kumudākara sasinaṃ,Tasināpaga parisosana satadīdhiti tulitaṃ;
Tamanāsava munisevitaṃ apalokita sukhadaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ aniketanaṃ akhilāgati vigataṃ.
I bow to the homeless one, gone beyond all destinations; who is a moon for the water-lily pond of the minds of those ready for training; who is like a hundred-rayed sun in drying up the river of craving; who is served by taintless sages and gives happiness when looked upon.
11.
11.
Sahitākhila bhayabheravaṃ abhayāgata saranaṃ,Ajarāmara sukhadāyakaṃ anirākata karuṇaṃ;
Tamupāsaka janasevita supatiṭṭhita caraṇaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ ahitāpahaṃ anaghuttama caraṇaṃ.
I bow to his most faultless feet, the remover of harm—feet that dispel all fear and terror, a refuge for those who come seeking safety; feet of one who bestows the happiness of the ageless and deathless, whose compassion is unfailing, and whose well-established feet are served by his lay followers.
12.
12.
Karuṇāmata rasapurita vīmalākhila hadayaṃ,Vihitāmita janatāhitaṃ anukampita bhuvanaṃ;

I bow to the faultless Sage, skilled in destroying evil, whose entire heart is pure and filled with the nectar-like essence of compassion; who works for the immeasurable welfare of beings, has compassion for the world, is famed in the world, and whose feet are served by hundreds of kings.
13.
13.

Paravādika janatākata paribhāsita khamanaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ atidevata vara gotama samaṇaṃ.
I bow to the monk Gotama, the excellent one, surpassing the gods; the tamer of the minds of ascetics afflicted by discontent and lust; who by his own teaching restrains the many sectarian monks; and who patiently endures the abuse uttered by the followers of other doctrines.
14.
14.
Saraṇāgata bhayanāsana vajirālaya paṇibhaṃ,Bhavasāgara patitāmita janatārana nirataṃ;
Sirasāvahaṃ amalañjali puṭapaṅkaja makulaṃ,Paṇamā’mahaṃ akhilalāya vigataṃ muniṃ atulaṃ.
I bow to the incomparable Sage, free from all attachments, whose presence is like a house of diamond, destroying the fears of those who seek refuge; who is devoted to rescuing the countless beings fallen into the ocean of existence; and to whom I reverently offer with my head a pure, lotus-bud-like salutation of cupped hands.
15.
15.
Vimalīkata janamānasa vigatāsava bhagavaṃ,Bhavapāraga vibhavāmata sukhadāyaka satataṃ;
Paramādara garugārava vinataṃ jina payataṃ,Padapaṅkaja rajasā mama samalaṅkuru sirasaṃ.
O Blessed One, purifier of the people's minds, free from taints, ever bestowing the happiness of Nibbāna, having crossed to the far shore of existence! With the highest esteem and deep respect I bow to the pure Victor. Adorn my head with the dust of your lotus feet.
16.
16.
Pavanāhata dumapallavaṃ iva nārata capalaṃ,Bhavalālasa malinīkataṃ ajitindriya nivahaṃ;
Cira sañcita duritāhataṃ anivārita timisaṃ,Vimalīkuru karuṇābhara sutaraṃ mama hadayaṃ.
My heart is fickle and unsteady like a young leaf struck by the wind, stained by craving for existence, a host of unconquered senses, afflicted by long-accumulated misdeeds, its darkness unwarded off. Purify it swiftly, O you who are laden with compassion!
17.
17.
Adaye dayaṃ anaye nayaṃ api yo guṇaṃ aguṇe,Ahite hitaṃ akaro kvacida api kenaci nakataṃ;
Sadaye jina sunaye guṇasadane tayi nitaraṃ,Suhite hitacarite’nagha ramate mama hadayaṃ.
You showed compassion to the uncompassionate, principle to the unprincipled, virtue to the virtueless, and benefit to the hostile—a good never done by anyone else anywhere. In you, the compassionate, the principled, the abode of virtue, the beneficial, the one of good conduct, O faultless Jina, my heart exceedingly delights.
18.
18.
Bhavasaṅkaṭa patitenapi bhavatā cira caritaṃ,Visame sama caraṇaṃ khalu dasapārami bharaṇaṃ;
Sarato’hani sarato nisi supinenapi satataṃ,Ramate jina sumate tvayi sadayaṃ mama hadayaṃ.
Though I have fallen into the thicket of existence, I remember how you for long practiced balanced conduct in the unbalanced, indeed fulfilling the ten perfections. Remembering this day and night, constantly, even in dreams, my heart delights in you, O compassionate Jina of good wisdom.
19.
19.

20.
20.
Atiduccaraṃ acarī bhavaṃ atiduddamaṃ adamī,Atiduddayaṃ adayī vata sadayāpara hadayo;
Iti te guṇaṃ anaghaṃ muni sarato mama hadayaṃ,Ramate’hani ramate nisi ramate tvayi satataṃ.
You practiced what is very difficult to practice, you tamed what is very difficult to tame, you were compassionate to the very uncompassionate—indeed, with a heart compassionate towards others! Thus, recalling your faultless quality, O Sage, my heart rejoices by day, rejoices by night, rejoices in you constantly.
21.
21.
Atiduggamaṃ agamī bhavaṃ atidujjayaṃ ajayī,Atidussahaṃ asahī vata samupekkhita manaso;

Parudiṃ ciraṃ atidussaha kasire bhavagahaṇe,Saraṇaṃ bhava bhagavaṃ mama bhavanīradhi taraṇe.
At the death of beloved elder and younger brothers and sisters, and at the death of my own relatives, friends, and pupils, I lamented very pitifully; long have I lamented in the unbearable, wretched thicket of becoming. Be my refuge, O Blessed One, for crossing the ocean of becoming.

Jagatīpati gahaṇā ripujanatakkara haraṇā,Saritodaka vahaṇā puthujalitānala dahaṇā;
Parudiṃ hatavibhavo ciramiha duggatigahaṇe,Saraṇaṃ bhava bhagavaṃ mama bhavanīradhi taraṇe.
From seizure by kings, from plunder by enemies and thieves, from being swept away by rivers, from being burned by widespread fires, I, bereft of wealth, have long lamented here in the thicket of a woeful state. Be my refuge, O Blessed One, for crossing the ocean of becoming.

Atiduggama visamākula bhavasaṅkaṭa patite,Byasanaṃ ciramiti dussahaṃ anubhūyapi vimitaṃ;
Na jahe sukhalavavañcitahadayo bhavatasinaṃ,Tamapākuru karuṇānidhi tasinaṃ mama kasiṇaṃ.
Fallen into the very difficult, uneven, and confused straits of becoming, and though having long experienced unbearable and immeasurable disaster, my heart, deceived by a particle of pleasure, does not abandon the thirst for becoming. Therefore, O Treasure of Compassion, remove this entire thirst of mine.

Jananāvadhi maraṇaṃ viya maraṇāvadhi jananaṃ,Ubhayenapi bhayamevahi bhavato mama niyataṃ;
Sivamevaca jananāvadhi maraṇāvadhi rahitaṃ,Dada me sivaṃ amatandada taṃ anāsava bhagavaṃ.
Just as death is the limit of birth, and birth the limit of death, for me fear is the certain outcome of both in this round of becoming. Only the peace that is free from the limits of birth and death is secure. Grant me that peace, O Blessed One, Giver of the Deathless, O Taintless One.

Ciradikkhitamapi me manaṃ anivārita tasinaṃ,Bhavato bhava ratipīlitaṃ ahaho kalighaṭitaṃ!Tamato pita bhayato mamamava me bhava saraṇaṃ,Bhagavaṃ paṭisaraṇaṃ mama bhavanīradhi taraṇaṃ.
Though my mind has been long disciplined, its craving is unrestrained, oppressed by delight in one state of becoming after another. Alas, how it is yoked to misfortune! Therefore, O Father, protect me from this terror. Be my refuge, O Blessed One, my resort for crossing the ocean of becoming.
