‘‘කප්පෙ [Pg.385] ච සතසහස්සෙ, චතුරො ච අසඞ්ඛියෙ;

එත්ථන්තරෙ යං චරිතං, සබ්බං තං බොධිපාචනං.

For a hundred thousand aeons and four incalculables, whatever conduct was practiced within this interval, all of that ripens for Awakening.

‘‘අතීතකප්පෙ චරිතං, ඨපයිත්වා භවාභවෙ;

ඉමම්හි කප්පෙ චරිතං, පවක්ඛිස්සං සුණොහි මෙ.

Having set aside the conduct practiced in various existences in past aeons, I shall declare the conduct in this very aeon. Listen to me.

‘‘යදා අහං බ්‍රහාරඤ්ඤෙ, සුඤ්ඤෙ විපිනකානනෙ;

අජ්ඣොගාහෙත්වා විහරාමි, අකිත්ති නාම තාපසො.

When I, the ascetic named Akitti, dwelt, having plunged into a great forest, a secluded wilderness grove.

‘‘තදා මං තපතෙජෙන, සන්තත්තො තිදිවාභිභූ;

ධාරෙන්තො බ්‍රාහ්මණවණ්ණං, භික්ඛාය මං උපාගමි.

Then, scorched by the power of my asceticism, the ruler of the Tāvatiṃsa heaven, assuming the guise of a Brahmin, approached me for alms.

‘‘පවනා ආභතං පණ්ණං, අතෙලඤ්ච අලොණිකං;

මම ද්වාරෙ ඨිතං දිස්වා, සකටාහෙන ආකිරිං.

Seeing him standing at my door, I offered the boiled leaves brought from the forest, which were without oil and salt, together with the cooking pot.

‘‘තස්ස දත්වානහං පණ්ණං, නික්කුජ්ජිත්වාන භාජනං;

පුනෙසනං ජහිත්වාන, පාවිසිං පණ්ණසාලකං.

Having given him the leaves and overturned the vessel, and having abandoned any further seeking, I entered the leaf-hut.

‘‘දුතියම්පි තතියම්පි, උපගඤ්ඡි මමන්තිකං;

අකම්පිතො අනොලග්ගො, එවමෙවමදාසහං.

A second time and a third, he approached my presence; unshaken and unattached, I gave in just the same way.

‘‘න [Pg.386] මෙ තප්පච්චයා අත්ථි, සරීරස්මිං විවණ්ණියං;

පීතිසුඛෙන රතියා, වීතිනාමෙමි තං දිවං.

On account of that, there was no discoloration in my body; with delight, joy, and happiness, I passed that day.

‘‘යදි මාසම්පි ද්වෙමාසං, දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යං වරං ලභෙ;

අකම්පිතො අනොලීනො, දදෙය්‍යං දානමුත්තමං.

If for a month or even two I were to find a noble recipient of offerings, unshaken and unstinting, I would give the supreme gift.

‘‘න තස්ස දානං දදමානො, යසං ලාභඤ්ච පත්ථයිං;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පත්ථයානො, තානි කම්මානි ආචරි’’න්ති.

Giving that gift, I longed for neither fame nor gain; aspiring to omniscience, I performed those deeds.

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, බ්‍රාහ්මණො සඞ්ඛසව්හයො;

මහාසමුද්දං තරිතුකාමො, උපගච්ඡාමි පට්ටනං.

Again, on another occasion, when I was a brahmin named Saṅkha, wishing to cross the great ocean, I approached a seaport.

‘‘තත්ථද්දසං පටිපථෙ, සයම්භුං අපරාජිතං;

කන්තාරද්ධානං පටිපන්නං, තත්තාය කඨිනභූමියා.

There on the path I saw the Self-Awakened One, the Unconquered, who had entered upon the long wilderness journey over the hot, hard ground.

‘‘තමහං පටිපථෙ දිස්වා, ඉමමත්ථං විචින්තයිං;

‘ඉදං ඛෙත්තං අනුප්පත්තං, පුඤ්ඤකාමස්ස ජන්තුනො.

Seeing him on the path, I reflected on this matter: ‘This field has arrived for a being who desires merit.’

‘‘‘යථා කස්සකො පුරිසො, ඛෙත්තං දිස්වා මහාගමං;

තත්ථ බීජං න රොපෙති, න සො ධඤ්ඤෙන අත්ථිකො.

‘Just as a farmer, seeing a great and productive field, if he does not plant seed there, is not one who has need of grain.’

‘‘‘එවමෙවාහං පුඤ්ඤකාමො, දිස්වා ඛෙත්තවරුත්තමං;

යදි තත්ථ කාරං න කරොමි, නාහං පුඤ්ඤෙන අත්ථිකො.

‘Just so, I, who desire merit, seeing this supreme, excellent field, if I do not perform a meritorious deed there, am not one who has need of merit.’

‘‘‘යථා අමච්චො මුද්දිකාමො, රඤ්ඤො අන්තෙපුරෙ ජනෙ;

න දෙති තෙසං ධනධඤ්ඤං, මුද්දිතො පරිහායති.

‘Just as a minister, desiring a seal of office, falls from that seal if he does not bestow wealth and grain upon the people in the king's inner court.’

‘‘‘එවමෙවාහං පුඤ්ඤකාමො, විපුලං දිස්වාන දක්ඛිණං;

යදි තස්ස දානං න දදාමි, පරිහායිස්සාමි පුඤ්ඤතො’.

‘So too, I, who desire merit, having seen a great recipient of offerings, if I do not give a gift to him, I shall fall away from merit.’

‘‘එවාහං චින්තයිත්වාන, ඔරොහිත්වා උපාහනා;

තස්ස පාදානි වන්දිත්වා, අදාසිං ඡත්තුපාහනං.

Having reflected thus, I took off my sandals, venerated his feet, and gave him my umbrella and sandals.

‘‘තෙනෙවාහං [Pg.387] සතගුණතො, සුඛුමාලො සුඛෙධිතො;

අපි ච දානං පරිපූරෙන්තො, එවං තස්ස අදාසහ’’න්ති.

Though I was a hundred times more delicate and comfortably raised than he, yet, while fulfilling the perfection of giving, I gave to him in this way.

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, ඉන්දපත්ථෙ පුරුත්තමෙ;

රාජා ධනඤ්චයො නාම, කුසලෙ දසහුපාගතො.

Again, on another occasion, when I was in Indapattha, the most excellent of cities, I was a king named Dhanañjaya, endowed with the ten wholesome qualities.

‘‘කලිඞ්ගරට්ඨවිසයා, බ්‍රාහ්මණා උපගඤ්ඡු මං;

ආයාචුං මං හත්ථිනාගං, ධඤ්ඤං මඞ්ගලසම්මතං.

Brahmins from the Kalinga country approached me; they begged of me the great elephant, which brings prosperity and is esteemed as auspicious.

‘‘‘අවුට්ඨිකො ජනපදො, දුබ්භික්ඛො ඡාතකො මහා;

දදාහි පවරං නාගං, නීලං අඤ්ජනසව්හයං.

‘The country is rainless, there is famine and great hunger. Give us the excellent elephant, the dark one named Añjana.’

‘‘‘න මෙ යාචකමනුප්පත්තෙ, පටික්ඛෙපො අනුච්ඡවො;

මා මෙ භිජ්ජි සමාදානං, දස්සාමි විපුලං ගජං’.

‘For me, when a petitioner has arrived, rejection is not fitting. May my resolve not be broken; I shall give the great elephant.’

‘‘නාගං ගහෙත්වා සොණ්ඩාය, භිඞ්ගාරෙ රතනාමයෙ;

ජලං හත්ථෙ ආකිරිත්වා, බ්‍රාහ්මණානං අදං ගජං.

Taking the elephant by the trunk, I gave it to the brahmins, pouring water from a jeweled water pot into their hands.

‘‘තස්ස නාගෙ පදින්නම්හි, අමච්චා එතදබ්‍රවුං;

‘කිං නු තුය්හං වරං නාගං, යාචකානං පදස්සසි.

When that elephant was given, the ministers said this: ‘Why do you give your excellent elephant to petitioners?’

‘‘‘ධඤ්ඤං මඞ්ගලසම්පන්නං, සඞ්ගාමවිජයුත්තමං;

තස්මිං නාගෙ පදින්නම්හි, කිං තෙ රජ්ජං කරිස්සති.

‘It brings prosperity, is endowed with auspiciousness, and is supreme in conquering battles. When that elephant has been given, what good will the kingdom be to you?’

‘‘‘රජ්ජම්පි මෙ දදෙ සබ්බං, සරීරං දජ්ජමත්තනො;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා නාගං අදාසහ’’’න්ති.

‘I would give my entire kingdom; I would even give my own body. Omniscience is dear to me; for that reason, I gave the elephant.’

‘‘කුසාවතිම්හි නගරෙ, යදා ආසිං මහීපති;

මහාසුදස්සනො නාම, චක්කවත්තී මහබ්බලො.

When I was in the city of Kusāvatī, I was a ruler of the earth, a wheel-turning monarch of great power named Mahāsudassana.

‘‘තත්ථාහං [Pg.388] දිවසෙ තික්ඛත්තුං, ඝොසාපෙමි තහිං තහිං;

‘කො කිං ඉච්ඡති පත්ථෙති, කස්ස කිං දීයතූ ධනං.

There, three times a day, I had it proclaimed here and there: ‘Who wants what? Who desires what? To whom shall what wealth be given?’

‘‘‘කො ඡාතකො කො තසිතො, කො මාලං කො විලෙපනං;

නානාරත්තානි වත්ථානි, කො නග්ගො පරිදහිස්සති.

‘Who is hungry? Who is thirsty? Who wants garlands? Who wants ointment? Who, being naked, will wear clothes of various colors?

‘‘‘කො පථෙ ඡත්තමාදෙති, කොපාහනා මුදූ සුභා’;

ඉති සායඤ්ච පාතො ච, ඝොසාපෙමි තහිං තහිං.

‘Who on the path will take a parasol? Who will take soft, beautiful sandals?’ Thus, in the evening and in the morning, I had it proclaimed here and there.

‘‘න තං දසසු ඨානෙසු, නපි ඨානසතෙසු වා;

අනෙකසතඨානෙසු, පටියත්තං යාචකෙ ධනං.

Not in ten places, nor in a hundred, but in many hundreds of places was wealth prepared for petitioners.

33.

‘‘දිවා වා යදි වා රත්තිං, යදි එති වනිබ්බකො;

ලද්ධා යදිච්ඡකං භොගං, පූරහත්ථොව ගච්ඡති.

Whether by day or by night, should a petitioner arrive, having received such wealth as they desire, they depart with full hands.

‘‘එවරූපං මහාදානං, අදාසිං යාවජීවිකං;

නපාහං දෙස්සං ධනං දම්මි, නපි නත්ථි නිචයො මයි.

Such a great gift I gave for as long as I lived. It was not that I gave wealth because I disliked it, nor was it that I had no store of it.

‘‘යථාපි ආතුරො නාම, රොගතො පරිමුත්තියා;

ධනෙන වෙජ්ජං තප්පෙත්වා, රොගතො පරිමුච්චති.

Just as one who is sick, for the sake of freedom from illness, having satisfied a physician with wealth, is freed from that illness.

‘‘තථෙවාහං ජානමානො, පරිපූරෙතුමසෙසතො;

ඌනමනං පූරයිතුං, දෙමි දානං වනිබ්බකෙ;

නිරාලයො අපච්චාසො, සම්බොධිමනුපත්තියා’’ති.

Even so I, knowing, in order to fulfill completely and to satisfy their wanting minds, give gifts to petitioners, without attachment or expectation, for the sake of attaining supreme enlightenment.

මහාසුදස්සනචරියං චතුත්ථං.

The Conduct of Mahāsudassana, the fourth.

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, සත්තරාජපුරොහිතො;

පූජිතො නරදෙවෙහි, මහාගොවින්දබ්‍රාහ්මණො.

5. Again, at another time, when I was the brahmin Mahāgovinda, purohita to seven kings and honored by human lords.

‘‘තදාහං සත්තරජ්ජෙසු, යං මෙ ආසි උපායනං;

තෙන දෙමි මහාදානං, අක්ඛොබ්භං සාගරූපමං.

At that time, whatever tribute was mine in the seven kingdoms, with that I gave a great gift, unshakeable and like the ocean.

‘‘න [Pg.389] මෙ දෙස්සං ධනං ධඤ්ඤං, නපි නත්ථි නිචයො මයි;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා දෙමි වරං ධන’’න්ති.

It is not that wealth and grain are disliked by me, nor is it that I have no accumulated store. Omniscience is dear to me; therefore, I give this excellent wealth.

මහාගොවින්දචරියං පඤ්චමං.

The Conduct of Mahāgovinda, the fifth.

6. නිමිරාජචරියා

The Conduct of King Nimi

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, මිථිලායං පුරුත්තමෙ;

නිමි නාම මහාරාජා, පණ්ඩිතො කුසලත්ථිකො.

6. Again, at another time, when I was in Mithilā, the supreme city, I was the great king named Nimi, wise and desiring the wholesome.

‘‘තදාහං මාපයිත්වාන, චතුස්සාලං චතුම්මුඛං;

තත්ථ දානං පවත්තෙසිං, මිගපක්ඛිනරාදිනං.

At that time, having caused a four-gated, four-chambered hall to be built, there I established the giving of alms to beasts, birds, men, and women.

‘‘අච්ඡාදනඤ්ච සයනං, අන්නං පානඤ්ච භොජනං;

අබ්බොච්ඡින්නං කරිත්වාන, මහාදානං පවත්තයිං.

Clothing and lodging, food, drink, and provisions; having made it uninterrupted, I established a great giving.

‘‘යථාපි සෙවකො සාමිං, ධනහෙතුමුපාගතො;

කායෙන වාචා මනසා, ආරාධනීයමෙසති.

Just as a servant, having approached his master for the sake of wealth, seeks to please him with body, speech, and mind;

‘‘තථෙවාහං සබ්බභවෙ, පරියෙසිස්සාමි බොධිජං;

දානෙන සත්තෙ තප්පෙත්වා, ඉච්ඡාමි බොධිමුත්තම’’න්ති.

Even so, in every existence, I will seek that which is born of enlightenment; having satisfied beings with giving, I desire supreme Enlightenment.

The Conduct of King Nimi, the sixth.

7. The Conduct of Prince Candakumāra

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, එකරාජස්ස අත්‍රජො;

නගරෙ පුප්ඵවතියා, කුමාරො චන්දසව්හයො.

Again, at another time, when I was in the city of Pupphavatī, I was the son of King Ekarāja, the prince named Canda.

‘‘තදාහං යජනා මුත්තො, නික්ඛන්තො යඤ්ඤවාටතො;

සංවෙගං ජනයිත්වාන, මහාදානං පවත්තයිං.

7. At that time, freed from the sacrifice and having departed from the sacrificial pit, I generated a sense of spiritual urgency and established a great giving.

‘‘නාහං පිවාමි ඛාදාමි, නපි භුඤ්ජාමි භොජනං;

දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යෙ අදත්වාන, අපි ඡප්පඤ්චරත්තියො.

Without having given to those worthy of offerings, I do not drink, I do not eat, nor do I consume food, even for five or six nights.

‘‘යථාපි [Pg.390] වාණිජො නාම, කත්වාන භණ්ඩසඤ්චයං;

යත්ථ ලාභො මහා හොති, තත්ථ තං හරති භණ්ඩකං.

Just as a merchant, having collected his merchandise, brings those goods to where the profit is great;

‘‘තථෙව සකභුත්තාපි, පරෙ දින්නං මහප්ඵලං;

තස්මා පරස්ස දාතබ්බං, සතභාගො භවිස්සති.

Even so, a gift given to others by sharing from one's own meal has great fruit. Therefore, what should be given to another will become a hundredfold portion.

‘‘එතමත්ථවසං ඤත්වා, දෙමි දානං භවාභවෙ;

න පටික්කමාමි දානතො, සම්බොධිමනුපත්තියා’’ති.

Knowing this purpose, I give gifts in existence after existence. For the sake of attaining perfect Enlightenment, I do not retreat from giving.

චන්දකුමාරචරියං සත්තමං.

The Conduct of Prince Canda, the seventh.

8. The Conduct of King Sivi

‘‘අරිට්ඨසව්හයෙ නගරෙ, සිවිනාමාසි ඛත්තියො;

නිසජ්ජ පාසාදවරෙ, එවං චින්තෙසහං තදා.

In the city named Ariṭṭha, I was a khattiya named Sivi. Seated in an excellent palace, I then reflected thus:

‘‘‘යං කිඤ්චි මානුසං දානං, අදින්නං මෙ න විජ්ජති;

යොපි යාචෙය්‍ය මං චක්ඛුං, දදෙය්‍යං අවිකම්පිතො’.

‘Whatever human gift there is, none remains ungiven by me. Should anyone ask me for my eye, I would give it without trembling.’

‘‘මම සඞ්කප්පමඤ්ඤාය, සක්කො දෙවානමිස්සරො;

නිසින්නො දෙවපරිසාය, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවි.

8. Knowing my resolve, Sakka, lord of the gods, while seated in the assembly of gods, spoke this word:

‘‘‘නිසජ්ජ පාසාදවරෙ, සිවිරාජා මහිද්ධිකො;

චින්තෙන්තො විවිධං දානං, අදෙය්‍යං සො න පස්සති.

‘Seated in his excellent palace, King Sivi, of great psychic power, while contemplating various kinds of gifts, sees nothing that cannot be given.’

‘‘‘තථං නු විතථං නෙතං, හන්ද වීමංසයාමි තං;

මුහුත්තං ආගමෙය්‍යාථ, යාව ජානාමි තං මනං’.

‘Is this true or is it false? Come now, I shall test him. Wait for a moment, until I know his mind.’

‘‘පවෙධමානො පලිතසිරො, වලිගත්තො ජරාතුරො;

අන්ධවණ්ණොව හුත්වාන, රාජානං උපසඞ්කමි.

Trembling, with white hair, a wrinkled body, and afflicted by old age, having taken on the appearance of a blind man, he approached the king.

‘‘සො තදා පග්ගහෙත්වාන, වාමං දක්ඛිණබාහු ච;

සිරස්මිං අඤ්ජලිං කත්වා, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවි.

Then he, having raised his left and right arms and placed his hands together in añjali at his head, spoke this word:

‘‘‘යාචාමි තං මහාරාජ, ධම්මික රට්ඨවඩ්ඪන;

තව දානරතා කිත්ති, උග්ගතා දෙවමානුසෙ.

‘I beg of you, O great king, righteous one, promoter of the realm! Your fame for delighting in giving has spread among gods and humans.’

‘‘‘උභොපි [Pg.391] නෙත්තා නයනා, අන්ධා උපහතා මම;

එකං මෙ නයනං දෙහි, ත්වම්පි එකෙන යාපය’.

‘Both my eyes are blind and ruined. Give me one eye; you too can live on with one.’

‘‘තස්සාහං වචනං සුත්වා, හට්ඨො සංවිග්ගමානසො;

කතඤ්ජලී වෙදජාතො, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං.

Having heard his word, I, delighted and with a stirred mind, filled with joy and with hands joined in reverence, spoke this utterance:

‘‘‘ඉදානාහං චින්තයිත්වාන, පාසාදතො ඉධාගතො;

ත්වං මම චිත්තමඤ්ඤාය, නෙත්තං යාචිතුමාගතො.

‘Just now, having resolved this, I have come here from the palace. You, knowing my mind, have come to ask for my eye.

‘‘‘අහො මෙ මානසං සිද්ධං, සඞ්කප්පො පරිපූරිතො;

අදින්නපුබ්බං දානවරං, අජ්ජ දස්සාමි යාචකෙ.

‘Ah, my heart’s desire is accomplished, my resolve is fulfilled! A supreme gift, never given before, today I shall give to the supplicants.’

‘‘‘එහි සිවක උට්ඨෙහි, මා දන්ධයි මා පවෙධයි;

උභොපි නයනං දෙහි, උප්පාටෙත්වා වණිබ්බකෙ’.

‘Come, Sivaka, arise! Do not delay, do not tremble! Having plucked them out, give both eyes to the mendicant.’

‘‘තතො සො චොදිතො මය්හං, සිවකො වචනං කරො;

උද්ධරිත්වාන පාදාසි, තාලමිඤ්ජංව යාචකෙ.

Then that Sivaka, urged by me, did my bidding. Having extracted them like a palm kernel, he gave them to the supplicant.

‘‘දදමානස්ස දෙන්තස්ස, දින්නදානස්ස මෙ සතො;

චිත්තස්ස අඤ්ඤථා නත්ථි, බොධියායෙව කාරණා.

For me, while giving, in the act of giving, and after the gift was given, there was no alteration of mind, for the sake of enlightenment alone.

‘‘න මෙ දෙස්සා උභො චක්ඛූ, අත්තා න මෙ න දෙස්සියො;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා චක්ඛුං අදාසහ’’න්ති.

“My two eyes are not hateful to me, nor is my self hateful to me. But Omniscience is dear to me; therefore, I gave my eyes.”

සිවිරාජචරියං අට්ඨමං.

‘‘යා මෙ අහොසි ජනිකා, ඵුස්සතී නාම ඛත්තියා;

සා අතීතාසු ජාතීසු, සක්කස්ස මහෙසී පියා.

She who was my mother, the Khattiya princess named Phussatī, in a past life was the beloved chief consort of Sakka.

‘‘තස්සා ආයුක්ඛයං ඤත්වා, දෙවින්දො එතදබ්‍රවි;

‘දදාමි තෙ දස වරෙ, වරභද්දෙ යදිච්ඡසි’.

Knowing that her life was coming to an end, the lord of devas said this: ‘O gracious one, I give you ten boons; choose whichever you desire.’

‘‘එවං වුත්තා ච සා දෙවී, සක්කං පුනිදමබ්‍රවි;

‘කිං නු මෙ අපරාධත්ථි, කිං නු දෙස්සා අහං තව;

රම්මා චාවෙසි මං ඨානා, වාතොව ධරණීරුහං’.

Thus spoken to, that devi again spoke this word to Sakka: ‘What offense of mine is there? Am I hateful to you? You would dislodge me from this delightful place, like the wind a tree.’

‘න චෙව තෙ කතං පාපං, න ච මෙ ත්වංසි අප්පියා.

Thus spoken to, that Sakka again spoke this word to her: ‘No evil has been done by you, nor are you unloved by me.

‘‘‘එත්තකංයෙව තෙ ආයු, චවනකාලො භවිස්සති;

පටිග්ගණ්හ මයා දින්නෙ, වරෙ දස වරුත්තමෙ’.

‘Your lifespan is only this much; the time for passing away will be. Accept the ten supreme boons given by me.’

‘‘සක්කෙන සා දින්නවරා, තුට්ඨහට්ඨා පමොදිතා;

මමං අබ්භන්තරං කත්වා, ඵුස්සතී දස වරෙ වරී.

That Phussatī, given the boons by Sakka, satisfied and delighted, greatly rejoicing, making me the innermost wish, chose the ten boons.

‘‘තතො චුතා සා ඵුස්සතී, ඛත්තියෙ උපපජ්ජථ;

ජෙතුත්තරම්හි නගරෙ, සඤ්ජයෙන සමාගමි.

Having passed away from there, that Phussatī was reborn among the Khattiyas; in the city of Jetuttara, she was united with Sañjaya.

‘‘යදාහං ඵුස්සතියා කුච්ඡිං, ඔක්කන්තො පියමාතුයා;

මම තෙජෙන මෙ මාතා, සදා දානරතා අහු.

When I descended into the womb of my dear mother, Phussatī, then, through my power, my mother was always delighting in giving.

‘‘අධනෙ ආතුරෙ ජිණ්ණෙ, යාචකෙ අද්ධිකෙ ජනෙ;

සමණෙ බ්‍රාහ්මණෙ ඛීණෙ, දෙති දානං අකිඤ්චනෙ.

To the poor, the sick, the aged, to supplicants and travelers, to ascetics, brahmins, the destitute, and the possessionless, she gave gifts.

‘‘දස මාසෙ ධාරයිත්වාන, කරොන්තෙ පුරං පදක්ඛිණං;

වෙස්සානං වීථියා මජ්ඣෙ, ජනෙසි ඵුස්සතී මමං.

Having carried me for ten months, while making a circumambulation of the city, in the middle of the merchants' street, Phussatī gave birth to me.

‘‘න මය්හං මත්තිකං නාමං, නපි පෙත්තිකසම්භවං;

ජාතෙත්ථ වෙස්සවීථියා, තස්මා වෙස්සන්තරො අහු.

My name is not derived from my mother, nor does it come from my father. Because I was born in the merchants' street, therefore I became Vessantara.

‘‘යදාහං දාරකො හොමි, ජාතියා අට්ඨවස්සිකො;

තදා නිසජ්ජ පාසාදෙ, දානං දාතුං විචින්තයිං.

When I was a child, eight years of age by birth, then, sitting in the palace, I reflected on giving gifts.

‘‘‘හදයං දදෙය්‍යං චක්ඛුං, මංසම්පි රුධිරම්පි ච;

දදෙය්‍යං කායං සාවෙත්වා, යදි කොචි යාචයෙ මමං’.

‘Should anyone ask me, I would give my heart, my eyes, my flesh, and also my blood; I would give my very body, declaring it to be that of a slave.’

‘‘සභාවං චින්තයන්තස්ස, අකම්පිතමසණ්ඨිතං;

අකම්පි තත්ථ පථවී, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

As I was reflecting thus, steadfastly and unshaken, the earth, which has Sineru as its floral diadem, trembled.

‘‘අන්වද්ධමාසෙ පන්නරසෙ, පුණ්ණමාසෙ උපොසථෙ;

පච්චයං නාගමාරුය්හ, දානං දාතුං උපාගමිං.

Every half-month, on the fifteenth, the full-moon Uposatha day, having mounted the elephant Paccaya, I would go to give gifts.

‘‘කලිඞ්ගරට්ඨවිසයා, බ්‍රාහ්මණා උපගඤ්ඡු මං;

අයාචුං මං හත්ථිනාගං, ධඤ්ඤං මඞ්ගලසම්මතං.

Brahmins from the Kalinga country approached me; they asked me for the great elephant, a bringer of prosperity and held to be auspicious.

‘‘අවුට්ඨිකො [Pg.393] ජනපදො, දුබ්භික්ඛො ඡාතකො මහා;

දදාහි පවරං නාගං, සබ්බසෙතං ගජුත්තමං.

‘Our country is rainless, there is famine, and great hunger. Give us the excellent great elephant, the all-white, supreme elephant.’

‘‘දදාමි න විකම්පාමි, යං මං යාචන්ති බ්‍රාහ්මණා;

සන්තං නප්පතිගූහාමි, දානෙ මෙ රමතෙ මනො.

Whatever the brahmins ask of me, that I give. I do not waver. I do not hide what I have. My mind delights in giving.

‘‘න මෙ යාචකමනුප්පත්තෙ, පටික්ඛෙපො අනුච්ඡවො;

‘මා මෙ භිජ්ජි සමාදානං, දස්සාමි විපුලං ගජං’.

When a supplicant has arrived, refusal is not proper for me. ‘May my resolution not be broken! I shall give the magnificent elephant.’

‘‘නාගං ගහෙත්වා සොණ්ඩාය, භිඞ්ගාරෙ රතනාමයෙ;

ජලං හත්ථෙ ආකිරිත්වා, බ්‍රාහ්මණානං අදං ගජං.

Taking the elephant by the trunk, and with a jeweled water pot pouring water upon the brahmins' hands, I gave the elephant to them.

‘‘පුනාපරං දදන්තස්ස, සබ්බසෙතං ගජුත්තමං;

තදාපි පථවී කම්පි, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

And again, as I was giving the all-white, supreme elephant, then too the earth, which has Sineru as its floral diadem, trembled.

‘‘තස්ස නාගස්ස දානෙන, සිවයො කුද්ධා සමාගතා;

පබ්බාජෙසුං සකා රට්ඨා, ‘වඞ්කං ගච්ඡතු පබ්බතං’.

Because of the gift of that elephant, the Sivis, angered, assembled; they banished me from their own kingdom, saying, 'Let him go to the Vaṅka mountain.'

‘‘තෙසං නිච්ඡුභමානානං, අකම්පිත්ථමසණ්ඨිතං;

මහාදානං පවත්තෙතුං, එකං වරමයාචිසං.

Though they were expelling me, I, unshaken and unhesitating, asked for one boon in order to hold a great almsgiving.

‘‘යාචිතා සිවයො සබ්බෙ, එකං වරමදංසු මෙ;

සාවයිත්වා කණ්ණභෙරිං, මහාදානං දදාමහං.

Being requested, all the Sivis granted me one boon. Then, having caused the alms-drum to be sounded, I gave the great alms.

‘‘අථෙත්ථ වත්තතී සද්දො, තුමුලො භෙරවො මහා;

දානෙනිමං නීහරන්ති, පුන දානං දදාතයං.

Then a sound arose there, tumultuous, terrible, and great: 'For giving they expel this man, yet he gives alms again!'

‘‘හත්ථිං අස්සෙ රථෙ දත්වා, දාසිං දාසං ගවං ධනං;

මහාදානං දදිත්වාන, නගරා නික්ඛමිං තදා.

Having given elephants, horses, and chariots, female slaves and male slaves, cattle and wealth—having thus given a great almsgiving—I then departed from the city.

‘‘නික්ඛමිත්වාන නගරා, නිවත්තිත්වා විලොකිතෙ;

තදාපි පථවී කම්පි, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

Having departed from the city, when I turned back to look, even at that time the earth, which has Sineru as its floral diadem, trembled.

‘‘චතුවාහිං රථං දත්වා, ඨත්වා චාතුම්මහාපථෙ;

එකාකියො අදුතියො, මද්දිදෙවිං ඉදමබ්‍රවිං.

Having given the four-horsed chariot, and standing at the great crossroads, alone and without a companion, I spoke this word to Queen Maddī:

‘‘‘ත්වං මද්දි කණ්හං ගණ්හාහි, ලහුකා එසා කනිට්ඨිකා;

අහං ජාලිං ගහෙස්සාමි, ගරුකො භාතිකො හි සො’.

‘Maddī, you take Kaṇhājinā; she is light, being the younger sister. I will take Jāli; he is heavy, for he is the elder brother.’

‘‘පදුමං [Pg.394] පුණ්ඩරීකංව, මද්දී කණ්හාජිනග්ගහී;

අහං සුවණ්ණබිම්බංව, ජාලිං ඛත්තියමග්ගහිං.

Like a red lotus or a white lotus, Maddī took Kaṇhājinā; like a golden image, I took Jāli, the Khattiya.

‘‘අභිජාතා සුඛුමාලා, ඛත්තියා චතුරො ජනා;

විසමං සමං අක්කමන්තා, වඞ්කං ගච්ඡාම පබ්බතං.

Of noble birth and delicate, we four Khattiyas, treading upon uneven and even ground, went to the Vaṅka mountain.

‘‘යෙ කෙචි මනුජා එන්ති, අනුමග්ගෙ පටිප්පථෙ;

මග්ගන්තෙ පටිපුච්ඡාම, ‘කුහිං වඞ්කන්ත පබ්බතො’.

Whatever people came along the by-way or the main path, we would ask them the way, saying: 'Where is the Vaṅka mountain?'

‘‘තෙ තත්ථ අම්හෙ පස්සිත්වා, කරුණං ගිරමුදීරයුං;

දුක්ඛං තෙ පටිවෙදෙන්ති, දූරෙ වඞ්කන්තපබ්බතො.

Seeing us there on the path, they would utter compassionate words. They would feel sorrow for us, saying: 'The Vaṅka mountain is far away.'

‘‘යදි පස්සන්ති පවනෙ, දාරකා ඵලිනෙ දුමෙ;

තෙසං ඵලානං හෙතුම්හි, උපරොදන්ති දාරකා.

Sāriputta, if the children saw fruit-bearing trees in the great forest, on account of those fruits, the children would cry.

‘‘රොදන්තෙ දාරකෙ දිස්වා, උබ්බිද්ධා විපුලා දුමා;

සයමෙවොණමිත්වාන, උපගච්ඡන්ති දාරකෙ.

Seeing the weeping children, the tall and great trees, of their own accord, bent down and approached the children.

‘‘ඉදං අච්ඡරියං දිස්වා, අබ්භුතං ලොමහංසනං;

සාහුකාරං පවත්තෙසි, මද්දී සබ්බඞ්ගසොභනා.

Sāriputta, seeing this wonder, unprecedented and hair-raising, Maddī, beautiful in all her limbs, gave an acclamation of joy.

‘‘අච්ඡෙරං වත ලොකස්මිං, අබ්භුතං ලොමහංසනං;

වෙස්සන්තරස්ස තෙජෙන, සයමෙවොණතා දුමා.

‘How wonderful in the world, how unprecedented, how hair-raising! By Vessantara's power, the trees have bent down of their own accord.’

‘‘සඞ්ඛිපිංසු පථං යක්ඛා, අනුකම්පාය දාරකෙ;

නික්ඛන්තදිවසෙනෙව, චෙතරට්ඨමුපාගමුං.

Sāriputta, the yakkhas shortened the path out of compassion for the children; on the very day of their departure, they arrived in the Ceta country.

‘‘සට්ඨිරාජසහස්සානි, තදා වසන්ති මාතුලෙ;

සබ්බෙ පඤ්ජලිකා හුත්වා, රොදමානා උපාගමුං.

Sāriputta, at that time, sixty thousand kings of my maternal uncle's clan lived in the Ceta country. All of them, with palms joined in reverence, approached me weeping.

‘‘තත්ථ වත්තෙත්වා සල්ලාපං, චෙතෙහි චෙතපුත්තෙහි;

තෙ තතො නික්ඛමිත්වාන, වඞ්කං අගමු පබ්බතං.

There, having had a friendly conversation with the Cetas and their princes, and having sent them away, we went to the Vaṅka mountain.

‘‘ආමන්තයිත්වා දෙවින්දො, විස්සකම්මං මහිද්ධිකං;

අස්සමං සුකතං රම්මං, පණ්ණසාලං සුමාපය.

Sāriputta, at that time, the king of devas, having summoned the mighty Vissakamma, commanded him, saying: 'Create a well-made, delightful hermitage and a leaf-roofed hut.'

‘‘සක්කස්ස වචනං සුත්වා, විස්සකම්මො මහිද්ධිකො;

අස්සමං සුකතං රම්මං, පණ්ණසාලං සුමාපයි.

Sāriputta, hearing Sakka’s word, the mighty Vissakamma created a well-made, delightful hermitage and a leaf-roofed hut.

‘‘අජ්ඣොගාහෙත්වා [Pg.395] පවනං, අප්පසද්දං නිරාකුලං;

චතුරො ජනා මයං තත්ථ, වසාම පබ්බතන්තරෙ.

Sāriputta, having entered the great forest, which was quiet and undisturbed, we four persons dwelt there in the midst of the mountain.

‘‘අහඤ්ච මද්දිදෙවී ච, ජාලී කණ්හාජිනා චුභො;

අඤ්ඤමඤ්ඤං සොකනුදා, වසාම අස්සමෙ තදා.

Sāriputta, at that time, I and Queen Maddī, and both Jāli and Kaṇhājinā, dispelling one another's sorrow, dwelt in the hermitage.

‘‘දාරකෙ අනුරක්ඛන්තො, අසුඤ්ඤො හොමි අස්සමෙ;

මද්දී ඵලං ආහරිත්වා, පොසෙති සා තයො ජනෙ.

Guarding the children, I stayed in the hermitage, which was not empty. That Maddī, having brought fruit, nourished the three of us.

‘‘පවනෙ වසමානස්ස, අද්ධිකො මං උපාගමි;

ආයාචි පුත්තකෙ මය්හං, ජාලිං කණ්හාජිනං චුභො.

Sāriputta, while I was living in the great forest, a traveler approached me. He asked for my children, both Jāli and Kaṇhājinā.

‘‘යාචකං උපගතං දිස්වා, හාසො මෙ උපපජ්ජථ;

උභො පුත්තෙ ගහෙත්වාන, අදාසිං බ්‍රාහ්මණෙ තදා.

Sāriputta, seeing the supplicant approach, joy arose in me. Taking both my children, I gave them to the brahmin at that time.

‘‘සකෙ පුත්තෙ චජන්තස්ස, ජූජකෙ බ්‍රාහ්මණෙ යදා;

තදාපි පථවී කම්පි, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

Sāriputta, when I was giving away my own children to the brahmin Jūjaka, even at that time the earth, which has Sineru and its forests as a diadem, trembled.

‘‘පුනදෙව සක්කො ඔරුය්හ, හුත්වා බ්‍රාහ්මණසන්නිභො;

ආයාචි මං මද්දිදෙවිං, සීලවන්තිං පතිබ්බතං.

Sāriputta, then again Sakka descended, and taking on the appearance of a brahmin, he asked me for Queen Maddī, who was virtuous and devoted to her husband.

‘‘මද්දිං හත්ථෙ ගහෙත්වාන, උදකඤ්ජලි පූරිය;

පසන්නමනසඞ්කප්පො, තස්ස මද්දිං අදාසහං.

Sāriputta, taking Maddī by the hand, and filling his cupped hands with water, with a serene mind and resolve, I gave Maddī to him.

‘‘මද්දියා දීයමානාය, ගගනෙ දෙවා පමොදිතා;

තදාපි පථවී කම්පි, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

Sāriputta, as Maddī was being given, the devas in the sky rejoiced. Then too the earth, which has Sineru and its forests as a diadem, trembled.

‘‘ජාලිං කණ්හාජිනං ධීතං, මද්දිදෙවිං පතිබ්බතං;

චජමානො න චින්තෙසිං, බොධියායෙව කාරණා.

Giving away Jāli, my daughter Kaṇhājinā, and the devoted Queen Maddī, I had no regret, for the sake of Enlightenment alone.

‘‘න මෙ දෙස්සා උභො පුත්තා, මද්දිදෙවී න දෙස්සියා;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා පියෙ අදාසහං.

My two children were not unloved by me, nor was Queen Maddī unloved. Omniscience was dear to me; therefore, I gave away those who were dear.

‘‘පුනාපරං බ්‍රහාරඤ්ඤෙ, මාතාපිතුසමාගමෙ;

කරුණං පරිදෙවන්තෙ, සල්ලපන්තෙ සුඛං දුඛං.

Furthermore, again, in the great forest, at the gathering with my mother and father, they lamented pitifully, conversing about happiness and suffering.

‘‘හිරොත්තප්පෙන ගරුනා, උභින්නං උපසඞ්කමි;

තදාපි පථවී කම්පි, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

With weighty moral shame and fear of wrongdoing, I approached both of my venerable parents; then too the earth, with Sineru and its forests as a diadem, quaked.

‘‘පුනාපරං [Pg.396] බ්‍රහාරඤ්ඤා, නික්ඛමිත්වා සඤාතිභි;

පවිසාමි පුරං රම්මං, ජෙතුත්තරං පුරුත්තමං.

Once again, leaving the great forest with my relatives, I entered the delightful city, Jetuttara, the supreme city.

‘‘රතනානි සත්ත වස්සිංසු, මහාමෙඝො පවස්සථ;

තදාපි පථවී කම්පි, සිනෙරුවනවටංසකා.

A rain of seven gems fell, and a great cloud poured down; then too the earth, with Sineru and its forests as a diadem, quaked.

‘‘අචෙතනායං පථවී, අවිඤ්ඤාය සුඛං දුඛං;

සාපි දානබලා මය්හං, සත්තක්ඛත්තුං පකම්පථා’’ති.

This earth is without consciousness, not knowing pleasure or pain; even it trembled seven times due to the power of my giving.

10. The Conduct of the Wise Hare

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, සසකො පවනචාරකො;

තිණපණ්ණසාකඵලභක්ඛො, පරහෙඨනවිවජ්ජිතො.

Once again, when I was a hare wandering in the forest, subsisting on grass, leaves, greens, and fruits, abstaining from harming others.

‘‘මක්කටො ච සිඞ්ගාලො ච, සුත්තපොතො චහං තදා;

වසාම එකසාමන්තා, සායං පාතො ච දිස්සරෙ.

A monkey, a jackal, an otter, and I, at that time, lived together nearby; we were seen in the evening and the morning.

‘‘අහං තෙ අනුසාසාමි, කිරියෙ කල්‍යාණපාපකෙ;

‘පාපානි පරිවජ්ජෙථ, කල්‍යාණෙ අභිනිවිස්සථ’.

I instructed them in actions wholesome and unwholesome: ‘Avoid evil deeds, and apply your minds to what is good.’

‘‘උපොසථම්හි දිවසෙ, චන්දං දිස්වාන පූරිතං;

එතෙසං තත්ථ ආචික්ඛිං, දිවසො අජ්ජුපොසථො.

On the Uposatha day, having seen the full moon, I announced to them, 'Today is the Uposatha day.'

‘‘දානානි පටියාදෙථ, දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යස්ස දාතවෙ;

දත්වා දානං දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යෙ, උපවස්සථුපොසථං.

‘Prepare gifts to give to one worthy of offerings; having given a gift to the worthy, observe the Uposatha.’

‘‘තෙ මෙ සාධූති වත්වාන, යථාසත්ති යථාබලං;

දානානි පටියාදෙත්වා, දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යං ගවෙසිසුං.

They, saying 'Well done!' to me, according to their ability and strength, prepared gifts and sought one worthy of offerings.

‘‘අහං නිසජ්ජ චින්තෙසිං, දානං දක්ඛිණනුච්ඡවං;

‘යදිහං ලභෙ දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යං, කිං මෙ දානං භවිස්සති.

I sat reflecting on a gift suitable for an offering: 'If I should find one worthy of offerings, what would my offering be?'

‘‘‘න මෙ අත්ථි තිලා මුග්ගා, මාසා වා තණ්ඩුලා ඝතං;

අහං තිණෙන යාපෙමි, න සක්කා තිණ දාතවෙ.

‘I have no sesame seeds, mung beans, or black beans, nor rice or ghee; I subsist on grass—it is not possible to give grass.’

‘‘‘යදි [Pg.397] කොචි එති දක්ඛිණෙය්‍යො, භික්ඛාය මම සන්තිකෙ;

දජ්ජාහං සකමත්තානං, න සො තුච්ඡො ගමිස්සති’.

‘If any one worthy of offerings should come to me for alms, I would give my very self; he will not leave empty-handed.’

‘‘මම සඞ්කප්පමඤ්ඤාය, සක්කො බ්‍රාහ්මණවණ්ණිනා;

ආසයං මෙ උපාගච්ඡි, දානවීමංසනාය මෙ.

Understanding my resolve, Sakka, in the guise of a brahmin, came to my dwelling to test my generosity.

‘‘තමහං දිස්වාන සන්තුට්ඨො, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං;

‘සාධු ඛොසි අනුප්පත්තො, ඝාසහෙතු මමන්තිකෙ.

Seeing him, delighted, I spoke these words: 'It is indeed good that you have arrived near me for the sake of food.'

‘‘‘අදින්නපුබ්බං දානවරං, අජ්ජ දස්සාමි තෙ අහං;

තුවං සීලගුණූපෙතො, අයුත්තං තෙ පරහෙඨනං.

‘A supreme gift, never given before, I will give to you today. You are endowed with virtue; it is unfitting for you to harm others.’

‘‘‘එහි අග්ගිං පදීපෙහි, නානාකට්ඨෙ සමානය;

අහං පචිස්සමත්තානං, පක්කං ත්වං භක්ඛයිස්සසි’.

‘Come, kindle a fire, gather various kinds of firewood; I will cook myself, and you shall eat me when cooked.’

‘‘‘සාධූ’ති සො හට්ඨමනො, නානාකට්ඨෙ සමානයි;

මහන්තං අකාසි චිතකං, කත්වා අඞ්ගාරගබ්භකං.

“‘Good,’ he said with a joyful mind, and gathered various kinds of firewood; he made a great pyre, having prepared a pit of embers.

‘‘අග්ගිං තත්ථ පදීපෙසි, යථා සො ඛිප්පං මහා භවෙ;

ඵොටෙත්වා රජගතෙ ගත්තෙ, එකමන්තං උපාවිසිං.

“He lit the fire there, so that it might quickly become great; shaking the dust from my limbs, I sat to one side.

තදුප්පතිත්වා පපතිං, මජ්ඣෙ ජාලසිඛන්තරෙ.

“When the great pile of firewood was blazing and crackling, then, leaping up, I fell into the midst of the flames.

සමෙති දරථපරිළාහං, අස්සාදං දෙති පීති ච.

“Just as cool water, having entered someone, soothes fever and burning, and gives pleasure and joy.

‘‘තථෙව ජලිතං අග්ගිං, පවිට්ඨස්ස මමං තදා;

සබ්බං සමෙති දරථං, යථා සීතොදකං විය.

“Just so, for me, having entered the blazing fire then, all distress was soothed, just like cool water.

කෙවලං සකලං කායං, බ්‍රාහ්මණස්ස අදාසහ’’න්ති.

“Outer skin, inner skin, flesh, sinews, bone, and the ligaments of the heart—my entire, whole body I gave to the brahmin.”

තස්සුද්දානං –

අකිත්තිබ්‍රාහ්මණො [Pg.398] සඞ්ඛො, කුරුරාජා ධනඤ්චයො;

මහාසුදස්සනො රාජා, මහාගොවින්දබ්‍රාහ්මණො.

The brahmin Akitti, Saṅkha, Dhanañcaya king of the Kurus, King Mahāsudassana, and the brahmin Mahāgovinda.

නිමි චන්දකුමාරො ච, සිවි වෙස්සන්තරො සසො;

අහමෙව තදා ආසිං, යො තෙ දානවරෙ අදා.

King Nimi and Prince Canda, King Sivi, King Vessantara, and the hare; at that time, it was I myself who gave those excellent gifts.

එතෙ දානපරික්ඛාරා, එතෙ දානස්ස පාරමී;

ජීවිතං යාචකෙ දත්වා, ඉමං පාරමි පූරයිං.

These are the requisites of giving; these are the perfections of giving. Having given my life to one who asked, I fulfilled this perfection.

භික්ඛාය උපගතං දිස්වා, සකත්තානං පරිච්චජිං;

දානෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ දානපාරමීති.

Seeing one who had come for alms, I sacrificed my own self. There is no gift equal to my gift; this is my perfection of giving.

දානපාරමිනිද්දෙසො නිට්ඨිතො.

“When I was in the forest, an elephant who nourished his mother, at that time there was no one on earth equal to me in virtue.

‘තවානුච්ඡවො මහාරාජ, ගජො වසති කානනෙ.

“A forester, having seen me in the forest, informed the king: ‘O great king, an elephant worthy of you dwells in the woods.’

‘‘‘න තස්ස පරික්ඛායත්ථො, නපි ආළකකාසුයා;

සහ ගහිතෙ සොණ්ඩාය, සයමෙව ඉධෙහි’ති.

2. “‘There is no need to capture him by surrounding him, nor by using a decoy or a pit. As soon as his trunk is held, he will come here of his own accord.’”

1. “Hearing those words, the king, with a delighted mind, sent the elephant tamer, a clever and well-trained master.

භිසමුළාලං උද්ධරන්තං, යාපනත්ථාය මාතුයා.

“Having gone, that elephant tamer saw me in the lotus lake, pulling up lotus roots for the nourishment of my mother.

‘‘විඤ්ඤාය මෙ සීලගුණං, ලක්ඛණං උපධාරයි;

‘එහි පුත්තා’ති පත්වාන, මම සොණ්ඩාය අග්ගහි.

“Having recognized the quality of my virtue, he examined my characteristics. Having said, ‘Come, son,’ he took hold of my trunk.

‘‘යං මෙ තදා පාකතිකං, සරීරානුගතං බලං;

අජ්ජ නාගසහස්සානං, බලෙන සමසාදිසං.

“Whatever natural strength I had then, inherent in my body, is now equal and similar to the strength of a thousand elephants.

‘‘යදිහං තෙසං පකුප්පෙය්‍යං, උපෙතානං ගහණාය මං;

පටිබලො භවෙ තෙසං, යාව රජ්ජම්පි මානුසං.

“If I were to become angry at them, who had come to capture me, I would be capable of destroying them, along with all the people in the entire kingdom.

‘‘අපි චාහං සීලරක්ඛාය, සීලපාරමිපූරියා;

න කරොමි චිත්තෙ අඤ්ඤථත්තං, පක්ඛිපන්තං මමාළකෙ.

“And yet, for the sake of protecting my virtue and to fulfill the perfection of virtue, I did not allow my mind to be altered, even as they were placing me in the stable.

‘‘යදි තෙ මං තත්ථ කොට්ටෙය්‍යුං, ඵරසූහි තොමරෙහි ච;

නෙව තෙසං පකුප්පෙය්‍යං, සීලඛණ්ඩභයා මමා’’ති.

“If they were to strike me there with axes and with spears, I would not become angry with them, out of fear that my virtue would be broken.”

“Again, another time, when I was the mighty Bhūridatta, I went to the deva world together with the great king Virūpakkha.

‘‘තත්ථ පස්සිත්වාහං දෙවෙ, එකන්තං සුඛසමප්පිතෙ;

තං සග්ගගමනත්ථාය, සීලබ්බතං සමාදියිං.

“Having seen the devas there, completely endowed with happiness, for the sake of going to that heaven, I undertook the practice of virtue and observance.

‘‘සරීරකිච්චං කත්වාන, භුත්වා යාපනමත්තකං;

චතුරො අඞ්ගෙ අධිට්ඨාය, සෙමි වම්මිකමුද්ධනි.

“Having performed my bodily duties and eaten just enough for sustenance, I resolved upon the four factors and lay down on the summit of an anthill.

‘‘ඡවියා චම්මෙන මංසෙන, නහාරුඅට්ඨිකෙහි වා;

යස්ස එතෙන කරණීයං, දින්නංයෙව හරාතු සො.

2. “‘With my outer skin, inner skin, flesh, or with my sinews and bones—whoever has need of these, let him take them. They are already given.’

‘‘සංසිතො අකතඤ්ඤුනා, ආලම්පායනො මමග්ගහි;

පෙළාය පක්ඛිපිත්වාන, කීළෙති මං තහිං තහිං.

“Having been pointed out by an ungrateful one, the snake charmer Ālambāyana seized me. Having put me into a basket, he makes me perform in various places.

‘‘පෙළාය පක්ඛිපන්තෙපි, සම්මද්දන්තෙපි පාණිනා;

ආලම්පායනෙ න කුප්පාමි, සීලඛණ්ඩභයා මම.

“Even when he put me in the basket, and even when he struck me hard with his hand, I did not become angry with Ālambāyana, from fear that my virtue would be broken.

‘‘සකජීවිතපරිච්චාගො, තිණතො ලහුකො මම;

සීලවීතික්කමො මය්හං, පථවීඋප්පතනං විය.

“For me, sacrificing my own life is lighter than a blade of grass; for me, transgressing virtue is like overturning the earth.

‘‘නිරන්තරං ජාතිසතං, චජෙය්‍යං මම ජීවිතං;

නෙව සීලං පභින්දෙය්‍යං, චතුද්දීපාන හෙතුපි.

“For a hundred births without interruption, I would give up my life; but I would never break my virtue, not even for the sake of the four continents.

‘‘අපි චාහං සීලරක්ඛාය, සීලපාරමිපූරියා;

න කරොමි චිත්තෙ අඤ්ඤථත්තං, පක්ඛිපන්තම්පි පෙළකෙ’’ති.

“Indeed, for the sake of protecting my virtue and to fulfill the perfection of virtue, I did not allow my mind to be altered, even as he was putting me into the basket.”

The Conduct of the Nāga Campeyya

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, චම්පෙය්‍යකො මහිද්ධිකො;

තදාපි ධම්මිකො ආසිං, සීලබ්බතසමප්පිතො.

“Again, at another time, when I was the mighty Campeyyaka, even then I was righteous, accomplished in virtue and observances.

‘‘තදාපි මං ධම්මචාරිං, උපවුත්ථං උපොසථං;

අහිතුණ්ඩිකො ගහෙත්වාන, රාජද්වාරම්හි කීළති.

Even then, while I was practicing the Dhamma and observing the Uposatha, a snake-charmer captured me and made me perform at the king's gate.

‘‘යං [Pg.401] යං සො වණ්ණං චින්තයි, නීලංව පීතලොහිතං;

තස්ස චිත්තානුවත්තන්තො, හොමි චින්තිතසන්නිභො.

Whatever color he conceived—blue, yellow, or red—following his thought, I became just as he imagined.

‘‘ථලං කරෙය්‍යමුදකං, උදකම්පි ථලං කරෙ;

යදිහං තස්ස පකුප්පෙය්‍යං, ඛණෙන ඡාරිකං කරෙ.

I could make land into water, and water I could make into land. If I were to become angry with him, in an instant I could reduce him to ashes.

‘‘යදි චිත්තවසී හෙස්සං, පරිහායිස්සාමි සීලතො;

සීලෙන පරිහීනස්ස, උත්තමත්ථො න සිජ්ඣති.

If I were to follow the sway of my mind, I would fall away from virtue. For one who has fallen from virtue, the supreme goal is not accomplished.

‘‘කාමං භිජ්ජතුයං කායො, ඉධෙව විකිරීයතු;

නෙව සීලං පභින්දෙය්‍යං, විකිරන්තෙ භුසං වියා’’ති.

Let this body break up as it may, let it be scattered right here; I would never break my virtue, even were it scattered like chaff.

චම්පෙය්‍යනාගචරියං තතියං.

The third, the Conduct of the Nāga Campeyya, is concluded.

4. The Conduct of Cūḷabodhi

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, චූළබොධි සුසීලවා;

භවං දිස්වාන භයතො, නෙක්ඛම්මං අභිනික්ඛමිං.

Again, at another time, when I was Cūḷabodhi, of excellent virtue, having seen existence as fearful, I went forth from the home for the sake of renunciation.

‘‘යා මෙ දුතියිකා ආසි, බ්‍රාහ්මණී කනකසන්නිභා;

සාපි වට්ටෙ අනපෙක්ඛා, නෙක්ඛම්මං අභිනික්ඛමි.

The brahmin woman who was my wife, with a complexion like gold, she too, unconcerned with the round of existence, went forth for the sake of renunciation.

‘‘නිරාලයා ඡින්නබන්ධූ, අනපෙක්ඛා කුලෙ ගණෙ;

චරන්තා ගාමනිගමං, බාරාණසිමුපාගමුං.

Without attachments, with bonds severed, unconcerned with family and clan, wandering through village and town, we came to Bārāṇasī.

‘‘තත්ථ වසාම නිපකා, අසංසට්ඨා කුලෙ ගණෙ;

නිරාකුලෙ අප්පසද්දෙ, රාජුය්‍යානෙ වසාමුභො.

There, being wise, we lived unmingled with family or clan. We two lived in the royal park, which was untroubled and quiet.

‘‘උය්‍යානදස්සනං ගන්ත්වා, රාජා අද්දස බ්‍රාහ්මණිං;

උපගම්ම මමං පුච්ඡි, ‘තුය්හෙසා කා කස්ස භරියා’.

Having gone to see the park, the king saw the brahmin woman. Approaching me, he asked: 'Who is this woman to you? Whose wife is she?'

‘‘එවං වුත්තෙ අහං තස්ස, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං;

‘න මය්හං භරියා එසා, සහධම්මා එකසාසනී’.

When this was said, I spoke this word to him: 'She is not my wife; she is a companion in the Dhamma, a fellow practitioner in the same dispensation.'

‘‘තිස්සා සාරත්තගධිතො, ගාහාපෙත්වාන චෙටකෙ;

නිප්පීළයන්තො බලසා, අන්තෙපුරං පවෙසයි.

Infatuated with and greedy for her, he had his attendants seize her and, oppressing her by force, had her brought into the inner palace.

‘‘ඔදපත්තකියා [Pg.402] මය්හං, සහජා එකසාසනී;

ආකඩ්ඪිත්වා නයන්තියා, කොපො මෙ උපපජ්ජථ.

As my former wife, my companion and fellow practitioner in the same dispensation, was being dragged and led away, anger arose in me.

‘‘සහ කොපෙ සමුප්පන්නෙ, සීලබ්බතමනුස්සරිං;

තත්ථෙව කොපං නිග්ගණ්හිං, නාදාසිං වඩ්ඪිතූපරි.

As soon as anger arose, I recollected my virtue and observance. Right there I suppressed that anger; I did not allow it to grow further.

35.

‘‘යදි නං බ්‍රාහ්මණිං කොචි, කොට්ටෙය්‍ය තිණ්හසත්තියා;

නෙව සීලං පභින්දෙය්‍යං, බොධියායෙව කාරණා.

Even if someone were to strike that brahmin woman with a sharp spear, I would not break my virtue, for the very sake of enlightenment.

36.

‘‘න මෙසා බ්‍රාහ්මණී දෙස්සා, නපි මෙ බලං න විජ්ජති;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා සීලානුරක්ඛිස’’න්ති.

It is not that this brahmin woman is hateful to me, nor is it that I lack strength; but omniscience is dear to me, therefore I protected my virtue.

චූළබොධිචරියං චතුත්ථං.

The fourth, the Conduct of Cūḷabodhi, is concluded.

5. The Conduct of the Buffalo King

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, මහිංසො පවනචාරකො;

පවඩ්ඪකායො බලවා, මහන්තො භීමදස්සනො.

Furthermore, when I was a buffalo that roamed the forest, of large body, endowed with strength, great in bulk, and of fearsome appearance,

‘‘පබ්භාරෙ ගිරිදුග්ගෙ ච, රුක්ඛමූලෙ දකාසයෙ;

හොතෙත්ථ ඨානං මහිංසානං, කොචි කොචි තහිං තහිං.

In valleys and in mountain gorges difficult to traverse, at the foot of trees and near lakes, in this place or that, was a standing place for buffaloes.

‘‘විචරන්තො බ්‍රහාරඤ්ඤෙ, ඨානං අද්දස භද්දකං;

තං ඨානං උපගන්ත්වාන, තිට්ඨාමි ච සයාමි ච.

Wandering in the great forest, I saw a pleasant place. Having approached that place, I would both stand and lie down.

‘‘අථෙත්ථ කපිමාගන්ත්වා, පාපො අනරියො ලහු;

ඛන්ධෙ නලාටෙ භමුකෙ, මුත්තෙති ඔහනෙතිතං.

Then a wicked, ignoble, and frivolous monkey, having come to that place, urinated and defecated upon me—on my shoulder, forehead, and brow.

‘‘සකිම්පි දිවසං දුතියං, තතියං චතුත්ථම්පි ච;

දූසෙති මං සබ්බකාලං, තෙන හොමි උපද්දුතො.

For one day, for a second, for a third, and also for a fourth day, it constantly defiled me; by it I was afflicted.

‘‘මමං උපද්දුතං දිස්වා, යක්ඛො මං ඉදමබ්‍රවි;

‘නාසෙහෙතං ඡවං පාපං, සිඞ්ගෙහි ච ඛුරෙහි ච’.

Seeing me afflicted, a tree-dwelling spirit spoke these words to me: ‘Destroy this wicked, corpse-like creature with your horns and with your hooves!’

‘‘එවං වුත්තෙ තදා යක්ඛෙ, අහං තං ඉදමබ්‍රවිං;

‘කිං ත්වං මක්ඛෙසි කුණපෙන, පාපෙන අනරියෙන මං.

When the spirit had spoken thus, I said this to him: ‘Why do you try to taint me with this wicked, ignoble, corpse-like creature?’

‘‘‘යදිහං [Pg.403] තස්ස පකුප්පෙය්‍යං, තතො හීනතරො භවෙ;

සීලඤ්ච මෙ පභිජ්ජෙය්‍ය, විඤ්ඤූ ච ගරහෙය්‍යු මං.

‘If I were to become angry at him, I would be even baser than he. My virtue would be broken, and the wise would censure me.

‘‘‘හීළිතා ජීවිතා වාපි, පරිසුද්ධෙන මතං වරං;

ක්‍යාහං ජීවිතහෙතූපි, කාහාමිං පරහෙඨනං’.

‘Better is death in purity than a despised life. Why, even for the sake of life, should I cause harm to another?’

‘‘මමෙවායං මඤ්ඤමානො, අඤ්ඤෙපෙවං කරිස්සති;

තෙව තස්ස වධිස්සන්ති, සා මෙ මුත්ති භවිස්සති.

‘Thinking others are just like me, he will do this to them as well. They will bring about his death. That will be my release.’

‘‘හීනමජ්ඣිමඋක්කට්ඨෙ, සහන්තො අවමානිතං;

එවං ලභති සප්පඤ්ඤො, මනසා යථා පත්ථිත’’න්ති.

‘The wise person who endures contempt from inferior, middling, and superior beings, thus obtains whatever excellent boon is wished for in the mind.’

මහිංසරාජචරියං පඤ්චමං.

The fifth, the Conduct of the Buffalo King, is concluded.

6. The Conduct of the Ruru Deer King

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, සුතත්තකනකසන්නිභො;

මිගරාජා රුරුනාම, පරමසීලසමාහිතො.

Furthermore, when I was the deer king named Ruru, with a complexion like refined gold, endowed with supreme virtue.

‘‘රම්මෙ පදෙසෙ රමණීයෙ, විවිත්තෙ අමනුස්සකෙ;

තත්ථ වාසං උපගඤ්ඡිං, ගඞ්ගාකූලෙ මනොරමෙ.

In a delightful and charming region, secluded and unfrequented by humans, on the heart-delighting bank of the Ganges, there I took up residence.

‘‘අථ උපරි ගඞ්ගාය, ධනිකෙහි පරිපීළිතො;

පුරිසො ගඞ්ගාය පපති, ‘ජීවාමි වා මරාමි වා’.

Then, upstream on the Ganges, a man oppressed by creditors fell into the river, having resolved, ‘Whether I live or die.’

‘‘රත්තින්දිවං සො ගඞ්ගාය, වුය්හමානො මහොදකෙ;

රවන්තො කරුණං රවං, මජ්ඣෙ ගඞ්ගාය ගච්ඡති.

Day and night, being swept along by the great current of the Ganges, crying out a pitiful cry, he went along in the middle of the river.

‘‘තස්සාහං සද්දං සුත්වාන, කරුණං පරිදෙවතො;

ගඞ්ගාය තීරෙ ඨත්වාන, අපුච්ඡිං ‘කොසි ත්වං නරො’.

Having heard his sound as he lamented pitifully, and having stood on the bank of the Ganges, I asked, ‘Who are you, O man?’

‘‘සො මෙ පුට්ඨො ච බ්‍යාකාසි, අත්තනො කරණං තදා;

‘ධනිකෙහි භීතො තසිතො, පක්ඛන්දොහං මහානදිං’.

And that man, having been asked by me, then explained his reason: ‘Afraid and terrified of creditors, I plunged into the great river.’

‘‘තස්ස කත්වාන කාරුඤ්ඤං, චජිත්වා මම ජීවිතං;

පවිසිත්වා නීහරිං තස්ස, අන්ධකාරම්හි රත්තියා.

Having felt compassion for him, giving up my own life, I entered the river and rescued him in the darkness of the night.

‘‘අස්සත්ථකාලමඤ්ඤාය, තස්සාහං ඉදමබ්‍රවිං;

‘එකං තං වරං යාචාමි, මා මං කස්සචි පාවද’.

Knowing the time when he had recovered, I spoke these words to him: ‘I ask one boon of you: do not speak of me to anyone.’

‘‘නගරං [Pg.404] ගන්ත්වාන ආචික්ඛි, පුච්ඡිතො ධනහෙතුකො;

රාජානං සො ගහෙත්වාන, උපගඤ්ඡි මමන්තිකං.

Having gone to the city, that man, when questioned by the king, told him, being motivated by wealth. Then, having brought the king, he approached my presence.

‘‘යාවතා කරණං සබ්බං, රඤ්ඤො ආරොචිතං මයා;

රාජා සුත්වාන වචනං, උසුං තස්ස පකප්පයි;

‘ඉධෙව ඝාතයිස්සාමි, මිත්තදුබ්භිං අනාරියං’.

The entire matter, just as it was, was related by me to the king. The king, having heard my words, prepared an arrow for that man, thinking: ‘Right here I shall kill this ignoble betrayer of a friend.’

‘‘තමහං අනුරක්ඛන්තො, නිම්මිනිං මම අත්තනා;

‘තිට්ඨතෙසො මහාරාජ, කාමකාරො භවාමි තෙ’.

Wishing to protect him, I offered myself in his place, saying: ‘Let him be, O great king. I shall be one who does your will.’

‘‘අනුරක්ඛිං මම සීලං, නාරක්ඛිං මම ජීවිතං;

සීලවා හි තදා ආසිං, බොධියායෙව කාරණා’’ති.

I protected my virtue; I did not protect my life. For I was virtuous at that time solely for the sake of Awakening.

රුරුරාජචරියං ඡට්ඨං.

The sixth, the Conduct of the Ruru Deer King.

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, ජටිලො උග්ගතාපනො;

මාතඞ්ගො නාම නාමෙන, සීලවා සුසමාහිතො.

7. Again, at another time, when I was a matted-haired ascetic of fierce austerity, Mātaṅga by name, I was virtuous and well-composed.

‘‘අහඤ්ච බ්‍රාහ්මණො එකො, ගඞ්ගාකූලෙ වසාමුභො;

අහං වසාමි උපරි, හෙට්ඨා වසති බ්‍රාහ්මණො.

I and a certain brahmin, we both dwelt on the bank of the Ganges; I dwelt upstream, and the brahmin dwelt downstream.

‘‘විචරන්තො අනුකූලම්හි, උද්ධං මෙ අස්සමද්දස;

තත්ථ මං පරිභාසෙත්වා, අභිසපි මුද්ධඵාලනං.

While wandering along the bank, he saw my hermitage upstream. There, having reviled me, he cursed me that my head might split.

‘‘යදිහං තස්ස පකුප්පෙය්‍යං, යදි සීලං න ගොපයෙ;

ඔලොකෙත්වානහං තස්ස, කරෙය්‍යං ඡාරිකං විය.

“If I were to become angry with him, if I were not to guard my virtue, by merely looking at him I could reduce him to ash.

‘‘යං සො තදා මං අභිසපි, කුපිතො දුට්ඨමානසො;

තස්සෙව මත්ථකෙ නිපති, යොගෙන තං පමොචයිං.

“Whatever curse he then inflicted on me, angry and with a malevolent mind, that very curse was about to fall upon his own head; by my spiritual power I freed him from it.

‘‘අනුරක්ඛිං මම සීලං, නාරක්ඛිං මම ජීවිතං;

සීලවා හි තදා ආසිං, බොධියායෙව කාරණා’’ති.

“I guarded my virtue; I did not guard my life. For I was virtuous then, solely for the sake of awakening.”

‘‘පුනාපරං [Pg.405] යදා හොමි, මහාපක්ඛො මහිද්ධිකො;

ධම්මො නාම මහායක්ඛො, සබ්බලොකානුකම්පකො.

Again, at another time, when I was a great yakkha named Dhamma, with a large following, of great psychic power, and compassionate toward the entire world.

‘‘දසකුසලකම්මපථෙ, සමාදපෙන්තො මහාජනං;

චරාමි ගාමනිගමං, සමිත්තො සපරිජ්ජනො.

Establishing the great populace in the ten courses of wholesome action, I wandered through villages and towns with my friends and retinue.

‘‘පාපො කදරියො යක්ඛො, දීපෙන්තො දස පාපකෙ;

සොපෙත්ථ මහියා චරති, සමිත්තො සපරිජ්ජනො.

A wicked, stingy yakkha, proclaiming the ten unwholesome actions, he too roamed here on earth with his friends and retinue.

‘‘ධම්මවාදී අධම්මො ච, උභො පච්චනිකා මයං;

ධුරෙ ධුරං ඝට්ටයන්තා, සමිම්හා පටිපථෙ උභො.

The speaker of Dhamma and the unrighteous one, we both were opponents. Striking chariot-pole against chariot-pole, we both met head-on on the path.

‘‘කලහො වත්තතී භෙස්මා, කල්‍යාණපාපකස්ස ච;

මග්ගා ඔක්කමනත්ථාය, මහායුද්ධො උපට්ඨිතො.

A terrifying quarrel arose between the virtuous one and the evil one over yielding the path; a great battle was imminent.

‘‘යදිහං තස්ස කුප්පෙය්‍යං, යදි භින්දෙ තපොගුණං;

සහපරිජනං තස්ස, රජභූතං කරෙය්‍යහං.

8. If I were to become angry with him, if I were to break my ascetic virtue, I could reduce him and his retinue to dust.

‘‘අපිචාහං සීලරක්ඛාය, නිබ්බාපෙත්වාන මානසං;

සහ ජනෙනොක්කමිත්වා, පථං පාපස්ස දාසහං.

Yet for the sake of protecting my virtue, having calmed my mind, I stepped aside with my people and gave the path to the evil one.

‘‘සහ පථතො ඔක්කන්තෙ, කත්වා චිත්තස්ස නිබ්බුතිං;

විවරං අදාසි පථවී, පාපයක්ඛස්ස තාවදෙ’’ති.

The moment I stepped aside from the path, having brought my mind to peace, the earth gave an opening to the evil yakkha at that very instant.

‘‘පඤ්චාලරට්ඨෙ නගරවරෙ, කපිලායං පුරුත්තමෙ;

රාජා ජයද්දිසො නාම, සීලගුණමුපාගතො.

In the Pañcāla country, in the excellent city of Kapilā, foremost among cities, there was a king named Jayaddisa, endowed with the quality of virtue.

‘‘තස්ස රඤ්ඤො අහං පුත්තො, සුතධම්මො සුසීලවා;

අලීනසත්තො ගුණවා, අනුරක්ඛපරිජනො සදා.

I was the son of that king, Alīnasattu by name, learned, of excellent virtue, possessed of good qualities, and always a protector of my retinue.

‘‘පිතා මෙ මිගවං ගන්ත්වා, පොරිසාදං උපාගමි;

සො මෙ පිතුමග්ගහෙසි, ‘භක්ඛොසි මම මා චලි’.

My father, having gone to the hunting ground, encountered a man-eater. He seized my father, saying, ‘You are my food; do not move!’

‘‘තස්ස [Pg.406] තං වචනං සුත්වා, භීතො තසිතවෙධිතො;

ඌරුක්ඛම්භො අහු තස්ස, දිස්වාන පොරිසාදකං.

Having heard his words, my father was terrified and trembling with fear; upon seeing the man-eater, his thighs became stiff.

‘‘මිගවං ගහෙත්වා මුඤ්චස්සු, කත්වා ආගමනං පුන;

බ්‍රාහ්මණස්ස ධනං දත්වා, පිතා ආමන්තයී මමං.

Having made a promise to return, and having given wealth to a brahmin, my father then addressed me.

‘‘‘රජ්ජං පුත්ත පටිපජ්ජ, මා පමජ්ජි පුරං ඉදං;

කතං මෙ පොරිසාදෙන, මම ආගමනං පුන’.

‘Son, take up the kingdom; do not be heedless regarding this city. An agreement has been made by me with the man-eater for my return.’

‘‘මාතාපිතූ ච වන්දිත්වා, නිම්මිනිත්වාන අත්තනා;

නික්ඛිපිත්වා ධනුං ඛග්ගං, පොරිසාදං උපාගමිං.

9. Having paid homage to my mother and father, and having offered myself in my father's place, I laid aside my bow and sword and approached the man-eater.

‘‘සසත්ථහත්ථූපගතං, කදාචි සො තසිස්සති;

තෙන භිජ්ජිස්සති සීලං, පරිත්තාසං කතෙ මයි.

‘Seeing me approaching with weapons in hand, he might become frightened. If I were to cause him fear, by that my virtue would be broken.’

‘‘සීලඛණ්ඩභයා මය්හං, තස්ස දෙස්සං න බ්‍යාහරිං;

මෙත්තචිත්තො හිතවාදී, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං.

For fear of breaking my virtue, I did not speak hatefully to him. With a mind of loving-kindness, speaking for his welfare, I spoke these words:

‘‘‘උජ්ජාලෙහි මහාඅග්ගිං, පපතිස්සාමි රුක්ඛතො;

ත්වං පක්කකාලමඤ්ඤාය, භක්ඛය මං පිතාමහ’.

‘Grandfather, kindle a great fire; I will fall from the tree. When you know I am well-cooked, you may eat me.’

‘‘ඉති සීලවතං හෙතු, නාරක්ඛිං මම ජීවිතං;

පබ්බාජෙසිං චහං තස්ස, සදා පාණාතිපාතික’’න්ති.

Thus, for the sake of my virtuous parents, I did not protect my own life; and I caused him, who was always a destroyer of life, to go forth into homelessness.

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, සඞ්ඛපාලො මහිද්ධිකො;

දාඨාවුධො ඝොරවිසො, ද්විජිව්හො උරගාධිභූ.

Again, at another time, when I was Saṅkhapāla, of great psychic power, with fangs for weapons, of dreadful venom, two-tongued, a sovereign of serpents.

‘‘චතුප්පථෙ මහාමග්ගෙ, නානාජනසමාකුලෙ;

චතුරො අඞ්ගෙ අධිට්ඨාය, තත්ථ වාසමකප්පයිං.

At a four-way crossroads on a great highway, crowded with various people, having undertaken the four factors of the observance, I took up my dwelling there.

‘‘ඡවියා චම්මෙන මංසෙන, නහාරුඅට්ඨිකෙහි වා;

යස්ස එතෙන කරණීයං, දින්නංයෙව හරාතු සො.

With my skin, hide, flesh, sinews, or bones—whoever has need of these, let them take what is already given.

‘‘අද්දසංසු [Pg.407] භොජපුත්තා, ඛරා ලුද්දා අකාරුණා;

උපගඤ්ඡුං මමං තත්ථ, දණ්ඩමුග්ගරපාණිනො.

The harsh, cruel, and merciless sons of Bhoja saw me; with sticks and clubs in hand, they approached me there.

‘‘නාසාය විනිවිජ්ඣිත්වා, නඞ්ගුට්ඨෙ පිට්ඨිකණ්ටකෙ;

කාජෙ ආරොපයිත්වාන, භොජපුත්තා හරිංසු මං.

Having pierced my nose, tail, and spine, the sons of Bhoja, placing me on a carrying pole, carried me away.

‘‘සසාගරන්තං පථවිං, සකානනං සපබ්බතං;

ඉච්ඡමානො චහං තත්ථ, නාසාවාතෙන ඣාපයෙ.

If I so wished, I could, with the wind from my nostrils, incinerate this earth with its forests and mountains, right to its ocean boundaries.

‘‘සූලෙහි විනිවිජ්ඣන්තෙ, කොට්ටයන්තෙපි සත්තිභි;

භොජපුත්තෙ න කුප්පාමි, එසා මෙ සීලපාරමී’’ති.

Though they pierced me with stakes and struck me with spears, I was not angered at the sons of Bhoja; this is my perfection of virtue.

සඞ්ඛපාලචරියං දසමං.

The Tenth: The Conduct of Saṅkhapāla.

හත්ථිනාගවග්ගො දුතියො.

The Second Chapter: The Noble Elephant.

තස්සුද්දානං –

The summary thereof:

හත්ථිනාගො භූරිදත්තො, චම්පෙය්‍යො බොධි මහිංසො;

රුරු මාතඞ්ගො ධම්මො ච, අත්‍රජො ච ජයද්දිසො.

The Elephant King, Bhūridatta, Campeyya, Bodhi, the buffalo, Ruru, Mātaṅga, Dhamma, and the son of Jayadisa.

එතෙ නව සීලබලා, පරික්ඛාරා පදෙසිකා;

ජීවිතං පරිරක්ඛිත්වා, සීලානි අනුරක්ඛිසං.

These nine were powers of virtue, accessories that were partial, for I guarded my virtues while protecting my life.

සඞ්ඛපාලස්ස මෙ සතො, සබ්බකාලම්පි ජීවිතං;

යස්ස කස්සචි නිය්‍යත්තං, තස්මා සා සීලපාරමීති.

But when I was Saṅkhapāla, my life was at all times given over to anyone whatsoever; therefore, that was the perfection of virtue.

සීලපාරමිනිද්දෙසො නිට්ඨිතො.

The Exposition of the Perfection of Virtue is concluded.

‘‘යදාහං [Pg.408] අමිතයසො, රාජපුත්තො යුධඤ්ජයො;

උස්සාවබින්දුං සූරියාතපෙ, පතිතං දිස්වාන සංවිජිං.

When I was Prince Yudhañjaya, of limitless fame, I saw a dewdrop fallen in the sun's heat and was stirred with spiritual urgency.

‘‘තඤ්ඤෙවාධිපතිං කත්වා, සංවෙගමනුබ්‍රූහයිං;

මාතාපිතූ ච වන්දිත්වා, පබ්බජ්ජමනුයාචහං.

Taking that very thing as my basis, I cultivated a sense of urgency; having paid homage to my mother and father, I requested the going forth.

‘‘යාචන්ති මං පඤ්ජලිකා, සනෙගමා සරට්ඨකා;

‘අජ්ජෙව පුත්ත පටිපජ්ජ, ඉද්ධං ඵීතං මහාමහිං’.

3. With hands clasped in reverence, the townspeople and countryfolk beseeched me: ‘Son, this very day, take up this great, prosperous, and thriving kingdom!’

‘‘සරාජකෙ සහොරොධෙ, සනෙගමෙ සරට්ඨකෙ;

කරුණං පරිදෙවන්තෙ, අනපෙක්ඛොව පරිච්චජිං.

1. While the king with his harem, and the townspeople with the countryfolk, were lamenting piteously, I renounced all, being unconcerned.

‘‘කෙවලං පථවිං රජ්ජං, ඤාතිපරිජනං යසං;

චජමානො න චින්තෙසිං, බොධියායෙව කාරණා.

Renouncing the entire earthly kingdom, relatives, retinue, and fame, I did not waver, for the sake of enlightenment alone.

‘‘මාතාපිතා න මෙ දෙස්සා, නපි මෙ දෙස්සං මහායසං;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා රජ්ජං පරිච්චජි’’න්ති.

My mother and father are not disliked by me, nor is great renown; but omniscience is dear to me, therefore I renounced the kingdom.

යුධඤ්ජයචරියං පඨමං.

The First: The Conduct of Yudhañjaya.

Furthermore, when I was in the excellent city of Indapatta, I was a son desired and beloved, renowned as Somanassa.

වුඩ්ඪාපචායී හිරීමා, සඞ්ගහෙසු ච කොවිදො.

Virtuous, endowed with good qualities, possessed of wise discernment, respectful to elders, conscientious, and skilled in the bases of sympathy.

‘‘තස්ස රඤ්ඤො පතිකරො, අහොසි කුහකතාපසො;

ආරාමං මාලාවච්ඡඤ්ච, රොපයිත්වාන ජීවති.

That king had an intimate, a deceitful ascetic. Having planted a park and a flower garden, he made his living.

‘‘තමහං දිස්වාන කුහකං, ථුසරාසිංව අතණ්ඩුලං;

දුමංව අන්තො සුසිරං, කදලිංව අසාරකං.

Seeing that deceitful one, like a heap of chaff without grain, like a tree hollow within, and like a plantain tree without heartwood,

‘‘නත්ථිමස්ස [Pg.409] සතං ධම්මො, සාමඤ්ඤාපගතො අයං;

හිරීසුක්කධම්මජහිතො, ජීවිතවුත්තිකාරණා.

2. ‘There is no Dhamma of the good in this one; he has departed from the ascetic life. He has abandoned the pure quality of moral shame for the sake of his livelihood.’

‘‘කුපිතො අහු පච්චන්තො, අටවීහි පරන්තිහි;

තං නිසෙධෙතුං ගච්ඡන්තො, අනුසාසි පිතා මමං.

The border region was in revolt, with forest bandits and border tribes. As he was going to suppress it, my father instructed me:

‘‘‘මා පමජ්ජි තුවං තාත, ජටිලං උග්ගතාපනං;

යදිච්ඡකං පවත්තෙහි, සබ්බකාමදදො හි සො’.

‘Do not be heedless, dear son, toward the matted-hair ascetic of austere practice. Provide for his every wish, for he is a giver of all that is desired.’

‘‘තමහං ගන්ත්වානුපට්ඨානං, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං;

‘කච්චි තෙ ගහපති කුසලං, කිං වා තෙ ආහරීයතු’.

I went to attend on him and spoke these words: ‘Are you well, householder? What may be brought for you?’

‘‘තෙන සො කුපිතො ආසි, කුහකො මානනිස්සිතො;

‘ඝාතාපෙමි තුවං අජ්ජ, රට්ඨා පබ්බාජයාමි වා’.

At this, that deceitful one, relying on conceit, became angry and said: ‘Today I will have you killed, or I will have you banished from the kingdom!’

‘‘නිසෙධයිත්වා පච්චන්තං, රාජා කුහකමබ්‍රවි;

‘කච්චි තෙ භන්තෙ ඛමනීයං, සම්මානො තෙ පවත්තිතො’.

Having pacified the border region, the king said to the deceitful one: ‘Venerable sir, I hope you are well? Was honor paid to you?’

‘‘තස්ස ආචික්ඛතී පාපො, කුමාරො යථා නාසියො;

තස්ස තං වචනං සුත්වා, ආණාපෙසි මහීපති.

The evil one reported to him in such a way as to have the prince destroyed. Hearing his words, the lord of the earth gave an order:

‘‘‘සීසං තත්ථෙව ඡින්දිත්වා, කත්වාන චතුඛණ්ඩිකං;

රථියා රථියං දස්සෙථ, සා ගති ජටිලහීළිතා’.

‘Cut off his head right there, quarter his body, and display it from street to street. Such is the fate for one who scorns the matted-hair ascetic!’

‘‘තත්ථ කාරණිකා ගන්ත්වා, චණ්ඩා ලුද්දා අකාරුණා;

මාතුඅඞ්කෙ නිසින්නස්ස, ආකඩ්ඪිත්වා නයන්ති මං.

There, the cruel, fierce, and merciless executioners came and, dragging me away as I sat on my mother's lap, they led me away.

‘‘තෙසාහං එවමවචං, බන්ධතං ගාළ්හබන්ධනං;

‘රඤ්ඤො දස්සෙථ මං ඛිප්පං, රාජකිරියානි අත්ථි මෙ’.

To them, as they were binding me tightly, I said this: ‘Show me to the king quickly, for I have royal duties.’

‘‘තෙ මං රඤ්ඤො දස්සයිංසු, පාපස්ස පාපසෙවිනො;

දිස්වාන තං සඤ්ඤාපෙසිං, මමඤ්ච වසමානයිං.

They showed me to the king, that evil one who consorted with evil. Having seen him, I made him understand and brought him under my control.

‘‘සො මං තත්ථ ඛමාපෙසි, මහාරජ්ජමදාසි මෙ;

සොහං තමං දාලයිත්වා, පබ්බජිං අනගාරියං.

Thereupon, he asked for my forgiveness and gave me the great kingdom. I, having destroyed that darkness, went forth into the homeless life.

‘‘න මෙ දෙස්සං මහාරජ්ජං, කාමභොගො න දෙස්සියො;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා රජ්ජං පරිච්චජි’’න්ති.

It is not that the great kingdom was hateful to me, nor was the enjoyment of sensual pleasures hateful. Omniscience alone was dear to me; therefore, I renounced the kingdom.

“Again, at another time, when I was the son of the king of Kāsi, I was raised in an iron house and was named Ayoghara.”

‘‘දුක්ඛෙන ජීවිතො ලද්ධො, සංපීළෙ පතිපොසිතො;

අජ්ජෙව පුත්ත පටිපජ්ජ, කෙවලං වසුධං ඉමං.

“My life was obtained with difficulty; I was nourished in confinement. The king said: ‘Son, this very day, take up this entire earth...

‘‘සරට්ඨකං සනිගමං, සජනං වන්දිත්ව ඛත්තියං;

අඤ්ජලිං පග්ගහෙත්වාන, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං.

‘...with its kingdoms, its towns, and its people.’ Having paid homage to the king, and having raised my cupped hands in reverence, I spoke this word:”

නිරාරක්ඛා සකෙ ගෙහෙ, වඩ්ඪන්ති සකඤාතිභි.

“‘Whatever beings there are on earth—low, excellent, and middling—grow up unprotected in their own homes with their own relatives.

‘‘‘ඉදං ලොකෙ උත්තරියං, සංපීළෙ මම පොසනං;

අයොඝරම්හි සංවඩ්ඪො, අප්පභෙ චන්දසූරියෙ.

“‘This nourishment of mine in confinement was unparalleled in the world; I was raised in an iron house, where there is no radiance of the moon and sun.

‘‘‘පූතිකුණපසම්පුණ්ණා, මුච්චිත්වා මාතු කුච්ඡිතො;

තතො ඝොරතරෙ දුක්ඛෙ, පුන පක්ඛිත්තයොඝරෙ.

“‘Having been released from my mother’s womb, a place full of various impurities, I was again cast into the iron house, a place of suffering more dreadful than that.

‘‘‘යදිහං තාදිසං පත්වා, දුක්ඛං පරමදාරුණං;

රජ්ජෙසු යදි රජ්ජාමි, පාපානං උත්තමො සියං.

“‘If I, having reached such extremely harsh suffering, should delight in kingdoms, I would be the chief among evil men.

‘‘‘උක්කණ්ඨිතොම්හි කායෙන, රජ්ජෙනම්හි අනත්ථිකො;

නිබ්බුතිං පරියෙසිස්සං, යත්ථ මං මච්චු න මද්දියෙ’.

“‘I am weary of this body and have no need for a kingdom. I will search for Nibbāna, where death cannot crush me.’”

‘‘එවාහං චින්තයිත්වාන, විරවන්තෙ මහාජනෙ;

නාගොව බන්ධනං ඡෙත්වා, පාවිසිං කානනං වනං.

“Having thought thus, while the great populace was wailing, like an elephant breaking its bonds, I entered the woodland forest.”

‘‘මාතාපිතා න මෙ දෙස්සා, නපි මෙ දෙස්සං මහායසං;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා රජ්ජං පරිච්චජි’’න්ති.

“My mother and father are not hateful to me, nor is great fame hateful to me. Omniscience is dear to me; therefore, I renounced the kingdom.”

අයොඝරචරියං තතියං.

“Again, at another time, when I was in the best and most excellent city of the Kāsīs, we—a sister and seven brothers—were reborn into a renowned Brahmin family.”

‘‘එතෙසං [Pg.411] පුබ්බජො ආසිං, හිරීසුක්කමුපාගතො;

භවං දිස්වාන භයතො, නෙක්ඛම්මාභිරතො අහං.

“I was the eldest among them, endowed with the pure quality of conscience. Having seen existence as fearful, I delighted in renunciation.”

‘‘මාතාපිතූහි පහිතා, සහායා එකමානසා;

කාමෙහි මං නිමන්තෙන්ති, ‘කුලවංසං ධරෙහි’ති.

“Sent by my mother and father, companions of one mind invited me with sensual pleasures, saying, ‘Carry on the family lineage.’”

‘‘යං තෙසං වචනං වුත්තං, ගිහීධම්මෙ සුඛාවහං;

තං මෙ අහොසි කඨිනං, තත්ත ඵාලසමං විය.

“The words they spoke, meant to bring happiness in the household life, were harsh to me, like a heated ploughshare.”

‘‘තෙ මං තදා උක්ඛිපන්තං, පුච්ඡිංසු පත්ථිතං මම;

‘කිං ත්වං පත්ථයසෙ සම්ම, යදි කාමෙ න භුඤ්ජසි’.

“As I was then rejecting their words, they asked about my aspiration: ‘Friend, what do you aspire to, if you do not enjoy sensual pleasures?’”

“To them, who wished for my welfare, I, who was seeking my own good, replied thus: ‘I do not aspire to the household state; I delight in renunciation.’”

“Having heard my words, they informed my father and mother. My mother and father then said, ‘Indeed, let us all go forth.’”

“Again, at another time, when I was in the city named Brahmavaḍḍhana, there I was born into a noble, excellent family of great wealth.”

චිත්තං භවතො පතිකුටති, තුත්තවෙගහතං විය.

“At that time too, seeing the world become blind, covered by darkness, my mind recoiled from existence, like one struck by the force of a swift arrow.”

‘කදාහං ගෙහා නික්ඛම්ම, පවිසිස්සාමි කානනං’.

“Having seen various evils, I thought thus at that time: ‘When shall I, having gone forth from home, enter the forest?’”

“At that time too, my relatives invited me with sensual pleasures. To them also I declared my wish, saying: ‘Do not invite me with these.’”

“My wise younger brother, named Nanda, also followed my example and took delight in the going forth.”

“At that time too, I, Soṇa, and Nanda, together with both my mother and father, having abandoned our wealth, entered the great forest.”

“Again, at another time, when I was the son of the king of Kāsi, I was known by the name Mūgapakkha, and they also called me Temiya.”

අහොරත්තානං අච්චයෙන, නිබ්බත්තො අහමෙකකො.

“Among sixteen thousand women, there was at that time no son. With the passing of days and nights, I alone was born.”

‘‘කිච්ඡා ලද්ධං පියං පුත්තං, අභිජාතං ජුතින්ධරං;

සෙතච්ඡත්තං ධාරයිත්වාන, සයනෙ පොසෙති මං පිතා.

“My father nurtured me, his beloved son—obtained with difficulty, of noble birth, and endowed with radiance—on a glorious bed, while holding a white parasol over me.”

‘‘නිද්දායමානො සයනවරෙ, පබුජ්ඣිත්වානහං තදා;

අද්දසං පණ්ඩරං ඡත්තං, යෙනාහං නිරයං ගතො.

“While sleeping on an excellent bed, I awoke at that time and saw the white parasol, on account of which I had gone to hell.”

‘‘සහ දිට්ඨස්ස මෙ ඡත්තං, තාසො උප්පජ්ජි භෙරවො;

විනිච්ඡයං සමාපන්නො, ‘කථාහං ඉමං මුඤ්චිස්සං’.

“As soon as I saw the parasol, a terrifying fear arose in me. I came to a decision, thinking: ‘How shall I be freed from this?’”

‘‘පුබ්බසාලොහිතා මය්හං, දෙවතා අත්ථකාමිනී;

සා මං දිස්වාන දුක්ඛිතං, තීසු ඨානෙසු යොජයි.

“A goddess who in a former life had been my mother, a deity wishing for my welfare, saw that I was distressed and urged me in three matters.”

‘‘‘මා පණ්ඩිච්චයං විභාවය, බාලමතො භව සබ්බපාණිනං;

සබ්බො තං ජනො ඔචිනායතු, එවං තව අත්ථො භවිස්සති’.

“‘Do not reveal your wisdom; be regarded as a fool by all beings. Let all people hold you in contempt. In this way, your purpose will be achieved.’”

‘‘එවං වුත්තායහං තස්සා, ඉදං වචනමබ්‍රවිං;

‘කරොමි තෙ තං වචනං, යං ත්වං භණසි දෙවතෙ;

“When she had spoken thus, I said this word to her: ‘I will do your bidding, O deity, that which you speak;

අත්ථකාමාසි මෙ අම්ම, හිතකාමාසි දෙවතෙ’.

You desire my welfare, mother; you desire my benefit, O deity.’”

‘‘තස්සාහං වචනං සුත්වා, සාගරෙව ථලං ලභිං;

හට්ඨො සංවිග්ගමානසො, තයො අඞ්ගෙ අධිට්ඨහිං.

Having heard her words, like one finding land in the ocean, I was joyful, my mind stirred with urgency, and I resolved upon three factors.

‘‘මූගො [Pg.413] අහොසිං බධිරො, පක්ඛො ගතිවිවජ්ජිතො;

එතෙ අඞ්ගෙ අධිට්ඨාය, වස්සානි සොළසං වසිං.

I became mute, deaf, and paralyzed, devoid of movement. Having resolved upon these factors, I lived for sixteen years.

‘‘තතො මෙ හත්ථපාදෙ ච, ජිව්හං සොතඤ්ච මද්දිය;

අනූනතං මෙ පස්සිත්වා, ‘කාළකණ්ණී’ති නින්දිසුං.

Then, having tested my hands and feet, my tongue and ears, and seeing me to be without defect, they reviled me, saying, ‘He is an unlucky creature!’

‘‘තතො ජානපදා සබ්බෙ, සෙනාපතිපුරොහිතා;

සබ්බෙ එකමනා හුත්වා, ඡඩ්ඩනං අනුමොදිසුං.

Then all the people of the countryside, the commander of the army, and the royal chaplain, all having become of one mind, approved of my abandonment.

‘‘සොහං තෙසං මතිං සුත්වා, හට්ඨො සංවිග්ගමානසො;

යස්සත්ථාය තපොචිණ්ණො, සො මෙ අත්ථො සමිජ්ඣථ.

Having heard their decision, I was joyful, my mind stirred with urgency, thinking: ‘The goal for which I practiced this austerity has been accomplished for me.’

‘‘න්හාපෙත්වා අනුලිම්පිත්වා, වෙඨෙත්වා රාජවෙඨනං;

ඡත්තෙන අභිසිඤ්චිත්වා, කාරෙසුං පුරං පදක්ඛිණං.

Having had me bathed and anointed, and having wrapped my head with the royal turban, they consecrated me under the parasol and had me circumambulate the city to the right.

‘‘සත්තාහං ධාරයිත්වාන, උග්ගතෙ රවිමණ්ඩලෙ;

රථෙන මං නීහරිත්වා, සාරථී වනමුපාගමි.

Having had the parasol held over me for seven days, when the sun’s orb had risen, the charioteer took me out by chariot and approached the forest.

‘‘එකොකාසෙ රථං කත්වා, සජ්ජස්සං හත්ථමුච්චිතො ;

සාරථී ඛණතී කාසුං, නිඛාතුං පථවියා මමං.

Having placed the chariot, yoked with fine horses, in a secluded spot, the charioteer, releasing the reins, dug a pit in the earth in order to bury me.

‘‘අධිට්ඨිතමධිට්ඨානං, තජ්ජෙන්තො විවිධකාරණා;

න භින්දිං තමධිට්ඨානං, බොධියායෙව කාරණා.

Though he threatened me for various reasons, I did not break my undertaken resolution, solely for the sake of Awakening.

‘‘මාතාපිතා න මෙ දෙස්සා, අත්තා මෙ න ච දෙස්සියො;

සබ්බඤ්ඤුතං පියං මය්හං, තස්මා වතමධිට්ඨහිං.

It is not that my mother and father are not dear to me, nor is my own self not dear. But omniscience is dearer to me; therefore, I undertook this vow.

‘‘එතෙ අඞ්ගෙ අධිට්ඨාය, වස්සානි සොළසං වසිං;

අධිට්ඨානෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ අධිට්ඨානපාරමී’’ති.

Having resolved upon these factors, I lived for sixteen years. In resolution, there is no one equal to me. This is my perfection of resolution.

‘‘යදා අහං කපි ආසිං, නදීකූලෙ දරීසයෙ;

පීළිතො සුසුමාරෙන, ගමනං න ලභාමහං.

When I was a monkey, dwelling in a ravine on the riverbank, oppressed by a crocodile, I could not get away.

‘‘යම්හොකාසෙ [Pg.414] අහං ඨත්වා, ඔරා පාරං පතාමහං;

තත්ථච්ඡි සත්තු වධකො, කුම්භීලො ලුද්දදස්සනො.

From the place where I stood, I would leap from this bank to the far bank. There dwelt my enemy, a slayer, a crocodile of cruel appearance.

‘‘සො මං අසංසි ‘එහී’ති, ‘අහංපෙමී’ති තං වතිං;

තස්ස මත්ථකමක්කම්ම, පරකූලෙ පතිට්ඨහිං.

He said to me, ‘Come!’ I replied to him, ‘I am coming!’ Having trodden upon his head, I stood firm on the far bank.

‘‘න තස්ස අලිකං භණිතං, යථා වාචං අකාසහං;

සච්චෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ සච්චපාරමී’’ති.

I spoke no falsehood to him; just as I spoke, so I acted. There is none equal to me in truth; this is my perfection of truth.

Again, at another time, when I was an ascetic named Sacca, I protected the world by means of truth; I made the people harmonious.

සච්චතාපසචරියං අට්ඨමං.

The eighth, the Conduct of the Ascetic of Truth.

9. The Conduct of the Young Quail

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, මගධෙ වට්ටපොතකො;

අජාතපක්ඛො තරුණො, මංසපෙසි කුලාවකෙ.

Again, at another time, when I was a young quail in Magadha, in the nest, unfledged, tender, a mere piece of flesh.

‘‘මුඛතුණ්ඩකෙනාහරිත්වා, මාතා පොසයතී මමං;

තස්සා ඵස්සෙන ජීවාමි, නත්ථි මෙ කායිකං බලං.

My mother nourished me, bringing food with her beak. I lived by her touch; I had no bodily strength.

‘‘සංවච්ඡරෙ ගිම්හසමයෙ, දවඩාහො පදිප්පති;

උපගච්ඡති අම්හාකං, පාවකො කණ්හවත්තනී.

Once a year, in the hot season, a forest fire blazes up. The fire, the purifier with a black path, approaches us.

‘‘ධමධමා ඉතිඑවං, සද්දායන්තො මහාසිඛී;

අනුපුබ්බෙන ඣාපෙන්තො, අග්ගි මමමුපාගමි.

Roaring fiercely and making a great sound, the fire with its great flames approached me, gradually burning everything in its path.

‘‘අග්ගිවෙගභයාතීතා, තසිතා මාතාපිතා මම;

කුලාවකෙ මං ඡඩ්ඩෙත්වා, අත්තානං පරිමොචයුං.

Frightened by the terrifying force of the fire, my alarmed mother and father, having abandoned me in the nest, freed themselves.

‘‘පාදෙ [Pg.415] පක්ඛෙ පජහාමි, නත්ථි මෙ කායිකං බලං;

සොහං අගතිකො තත්ථ, එවං චින්තෙසහං තදා.

I had no power over my feet or my wings; I had no bodily strength. Being unable to escape there, I thought thus at that time:

‘‘‘යෙසාහං උපධාවෙය්‍යං, භීතො තසිතවෙධිතො;

තෙ මං ඔහාය පක්කන්තා, කථං මෙ අජ්ජ කාතවෙ.

‘Those to whom I would run, being frightened and trembling with terror—they have abandoned me and departed. What is to be done by me today?’

‘‘‘අත්ථි ලොකෙ සීලගුණො, සච්චං සොචෙය්‍යනුද්දයා;

තෙන සච්චෙන කාහාමි, සච්චකිරියමුත්තමං.

‘There exists in the world the quality of virtue, truth, purity, and compassion. By that truth, I shall perform a supreme act of truth.’

‘‘‘ආවෙජ්ජෙත්වා ධම්මබලං, සරිත්වා පුබ්බකෙ ජිනෙ;

සච්චබලමවස්සාය, සච්චකිරියමකාසහං.

‘Having reflected on the power of the Dhamma, having recalled the former Conquerors, relying on the power of truth, I performed an act of truth.’

‘‘‘සන්ති පක්ඛා අපතනා, සන්ති පාදා අවඤ්චනා;

මාතාපිතා ච නික්ඛන්තා, ජාතවෙද පටික්කම’.

‘I have wings, but they cannot fly; I have feet, but they cannot walk. My mother and father have departed. O Jātaveda, Fire, retreat!’

‘‘සහසච්චෙ කතෙ මය්හං, මහාපජ්ජලිතො සිඛී;

වජ්ජෙසි සොළසකරීසානි, උදකං පත්වා යථා සිඛී;

සච්චෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ සච්චපාරමී’’ති.

As soon as I performed that act of truth, the greatly blazing fire retreated for sixteen karīsas, just as a fire is extinguished upon reaching water. There is none equal to me in truth; this is my perfection of truth.

වට්ටපොතකචරියං නවමං.

The ninth, the Conduct of the Young Quail.

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, මච්ඡරාජා මහාසරෙ;

උණ්හෙ සූරියසන්තාපෙ, සරෙ උදක ඛීයථ.

Again, at another time, when I was the fish king in a great lake, during the hot season, due to the sun's heat, the water in the lake was exhausted.

‘‘තතො කාකා ච ගිජ්ඣා ච, කඞ්කා කුලලසෙනකා;

භක්ඛයන්ති දිවාරත්තිං, මච්ඡෙ උපනිසීදිය.

Then crows and vultures, herons, ospreys, and hawks, having settled nearby, devoured the fish day and night.

‘‘එවං චින්තෙසහං තත්ථ, සහ ඤාතීහි පීළිතො;

‘කෙන නු ඛො උපායෙන, ඤාතී දුක්ඛා පමොචයෙ’.

Thus I pondered there, afflicted together with my kinsmen: ‘By what means indeed might I free my kinsmen from suffering?’

‘‘විචින්තයිත්වා ධම්මත්ථං, සච්චං අද්දස පස්සයං;

සච්චෙ ඨත්වා පමොචෙසිං, ඤාතීනං තං අතික්ඛයං.

Having reflected upon the true nature of things, I saw truth as a refuge. Established in truth, I freed my kinsmen from that destruction.

‘‘අනුස්සරිත්වා සතං ධම්මං, පරමත්ථං විචින්තයං;

අකාසි සච්චකිරියං, යං ලොකෙ ධුවසස්සතං.

Recalling the Dhamma of the virtuous, contemplating the ultimate truth, I made an act of truth, which in the world is firm and everlasting.

‘‘‘යතො [Pg.416] සරාමි අත්තානං, යතො පත්තොස්මි විඤ්ඤුතං;

නාභිජානාමි සඤ්චිච්ච, එකපාණම්පි හිංසිතං.

From when I remember myself, from when I attained discernment, I do not recall having intentionally harmed even a single living being.

‘‘‘එතෙන සච්චවජ්ජෙන, පජ්ජුන්නො අභිවස්සතු;

අභිත්ථනය පජ්ජුන්න, නිධිං කාකස්ස නාසය;

කාකං සොකාය රන්ධෙහි, මච්ඡෙ සොකා පමොචය’.

By this utterance of truth, may Pajjunna rain down heavily! Thunder forth, O Pajjunna, destroy the treasure of the crows! Afflict the crows with sorrow; release the fish from sorrow!

‘‘සහකතෙ සච්චවරෙ, පජ්ජුන්නො අභිගජ්ජිය;

ථලං නින්නඤ්ච පූරෙන්තො, ඛණෙන අභිවස්සථ.

As soon as that excellent declaration of truth was made, Pajjunna, thundering forth, filling the high and low ground, rained down heavily in that very moment.

‘‘එවරූපං සච්චවරං, කත්වා වීරියමුත්තමං;

වස්සාපෙසිං මහාමෙඝං, සච්චතෙජබලස්සිතො;

Having made such an excellent declaration of truth, an act of supreme effort, I, relying on the power and might of truth, caused a great cloud to rain.

සච්චෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ සච්චපාරමී’’ති.

There is nothing equal to my truth; this is my perfection of truth.

මච්ඡරාජචරියං දසමං.

The tenth, the Conduct of the Fish King, is concluded.

11. කණ්හදීපායනචරියා

11. The Conduct of Kaṇhadīpāyana

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, කණ්හදීපායනො ඉසි;

පරොපඤ්ඤාසවස්සානි, අනභිරතොචරිං අහං.

Again, at another time, when I was the ascetic Kaṇhadīpāyana, for over fifty years I practiced without delight.

‘‘න කොචි එතං ජානාති, අනභිරතිමනං මම;

අහඤ්හි කස්සචි නාචික්ඛිං, අරති මෙ චරති මානසෙ.

No one knew of this discontent in my mind, for I told no one that discontent was active in my mind.

‘‘සබ්‍රහ්මචාරී මණ්ඩබ්‍යො, සහායො මෙ මහාඉසි;

පුබ්බකම්මසමායුත්තො, සූලමාරොපනං ලභි.

My companion, the great seer Maṇḍabya, my fellow practitioner of the holy life, due to his connection with past kamma, was subjected to impalement.

‘‘තමහං උපට්ඨහිත්වාන, ආරොග්‍යමනුපාපයිං;

ආපුච්ඡිත්වාන ආගඤ්ඡිං, යං මය්හං සකමස්සමං.

Having attended to him, I caused him to attain health. Having taken my leave of him, I came to my own hermitage.

‘‘සහායො බ්‍රාහ්මණො මය්හං, භරියං ආදාය පුත්තකං;

තයො ජනා සමාගන්ත්වා, ආගඤ්ඡුං පාහුනාගතං.

A brahmin friend of mine, taking his wife and young son, the three of them came together as visiting guests.

‘‘සම්මොදමානො තෙහි සහ, නිසින්නො සකමස්සමෙ;

දාරකො වට්ටමනුක්ඛිපං, ආසීවිසමකොපයි.

While I was sitting in my own hermitage, rejoicing with them, the young boy, while playing with a top, provoked a venomous snake.

‘‘තතො සො වට්ටගතං මග්ගං, අන්වෙසන්තො කුමාරකො;

ආසීවිසස්ස හත්ථෙන, උත්තමඞ්ගං පරාමසි.

Then that young boy, searching for the path taken by the top, touched the head of the venomous snake with his hand.

‘‘තස්ස [Pg.417] ආමසනෙ කුද්ධො, සප්පො විසබලස්සිතො;

කුපිතො පරමකොපෙන, අඩංසි දාරකං ඛණෙ.

Angered by his touch, the snake, relying on the power of its venom, enraged with extreme anger, bit the boy in an instant.

‘‘සහදට්ඨො ආසීවිසෙන, දාරකො පපති භූමියං;

තෙනාහං දුක්ඛිතො ආසිං, මම වාහසි තං දුක්ඛං.

As soon as he was bitten by the venomous snake, the boy fell upon the ground. At that, I was afflicted with sorrow, and I bore that suffering as if it were my own.

‘‘ත්‍යාහං අස්සාසයිත්වාන, දුක්ඛිතෙ සොකසල්ලිතෙ;

පඨමං අකාසිං කිරියං, අග්ගං සච්චං වරුත්තමං.

Having consoled them, who were afflicted and pierced by the dart of sorrow, I first performed an act, a foremost, excellent, and supreme declaration of truth.

‘‘‘සත්තාහමෙවාහං පසන්නචිත්තො, පුඤ්ඤත්ථිකො අචරිං බ්‍රහ්මචරියං;

අථාපරං යං චරිතං මමෙදං, වස්සානි පඤ්ඤාසසමාධිකානි.

‘For only seven days, with a serene mind and desiring merit, did I practice the holy life. As for my subsequent practice, for more than fifty years,

‘‘‘අකාමකො වාහි අහං චරාමි, එතෙන සච්චෙන සුවත්ථි හොතු;

හතං විසං ජීවතු යඤ්ඤදත්තො’.

I have practiced it unwillingly. By this truth, may there be well-being! May the poison be destroyed! May Yaññadatta live!’

‘‘සහ සච්චෙ කතෙ මය්හං, විසවෙගෙන වෙධිතො;

අබුජ්ඣිත්වාන වුට්ඨාසි, අරොගො චාසි මාණවො;

සච්චෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ සච්චපාරමී’’ති.

As soon as the declaration of truth was made by me, the boy, who had been trembling with the venom’s force, awoke and arose. He was also free from illness. There is nothing equal to my truth; this is my perfection of truth.

කණ්හදීපායනචරියං එකාදසමං.

The eleventh, the Conduct of Kaṇhadīpāyana, is concluded.

12. The Conduct of Sutasoma

ගහිතො පොරිසාදෙන, බ්‍රාහ්මණෙ සඞ්ගරං සරිං.

Again, at another time, when I was the monarch Sutasoma, having been seized by Porisāda, I recalled my promise to the brahmin.

‘‘ඛත්තියානං එකසතං, ආවුණිත්වා කරත්තලෙ;

එතෙසං පමිලාපෙත්වා, යඤ්ඤත්ථෙ උපනයී මමං.

Having strung a cord through the palms of one hundred khattiyas, and having caused them to languish, he led me to the place of sacrifice.

‘‘අපුච්ඡි මං පොරිසාදො, ‘කිං ත්වං ඉච්ඡසි නිස්සජං;

යථාමති තෙ කාහාමි, යදි මෙ ත්වං පුනෙහිසි’.

Porisāda asked me: ‘Do you wish to be released? I will do according to your wish, if you will return to me again.’

‘‘තස්ස [Pg.418] පටිස්සුණිත්වාන, පණ්හෙ ආගමනං මම;

උපගන්ත්වා පුරං රම්මං, රජ්ජං නිය්‍යාදයිං තදා.

Having promised him my return, I went to the delightful city and at that time handed over the kingdom.

‘‘අනුස්සරිත්වා සතං ධම්මං, පුබ්බකං ජිනසෙවිතං;

බ්‍රාහ්මණස්ස ධනං දත්වා, පොරිසාදං උපාගමිං.

Recollecting the principle of the virtuous, practiced by the Jinas of the past, and having given wealth to the brahmin, I returned to Porisāda.

‘‘නත්ථි මෙ සංසයො තත්ථ, ඝාතයිස්සති වා න වා;

සච්චවාචානුරක්ඛන්තො, ජීවිතං චජිතුමුපාගමිං;

සච්චෙන මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ සච්චපාරමී’’ති.

I had no doubt about it, whether he would kill me or not. Protecting my truthful speech, I returned to give up my life. There is nothing equal to my truth; this is my perfection of truth.

සුතසොමචරියං ද්වාදසමං.

The twelfth, the Conduct of Sutasoma, is concluded.

‘‘සාමො යදා වනෙ ආසිං, සක්කෙන අභිනිම්මිතො;

පවනෙ සීහබ්‍යග්ඝෙ ච, මෙත්තායමුපනාමයිං.

When I was Sāma in the forest, fashioned by Sakka, I inclined the lions and tigers in that great forest with loving-kindness.

‘‘සීහබ්‍යග්ඝෙහි දීපීහි, අච්ඡෙහි මහිසෙහි ච;

පසදමිගවරාහෙහි, පරිවාරෙත්වා වනෙ වසිං.

Surrounded by lions, tigers, and leopards, by bears and buffaloes, by spotted deer and excellent boars, I dwelt in the forest.

‘‘න මං කොචි උත්තසති, නපි භායාමි කස්සචි;

මෙත්තාබලෙනුපත්ථද්ධො, රමාමි පවනෙ තදා’’ති.

No one was terrified of me, nor did I fear anyone; supported by the power of loving-kindness, I delighted in the great forest then.

සුවණ්ණසාමචරියං තෙරසමං.

The thirteenth, the Conduct of Suvaṇṇasāma, is concluded.

14. The Conduct of King Ekarāja

‘‘පුනාපරං යදා හොමි, එකරාජාති විස්සුතො;

පරමං සීලං අධිට්ඨාය, පසාසාමි මහාමහිං.

Again, at another time, when I was renowned as Ekarāja, having firmly undertaken the supreme virtue, I governed the great earth.

‘‘දස කුසලකම්මපථෙ, වත්තාමි අනවසෙසතො;

චතූහි සඞ්ගහවත්ථූහි, සඞ්ගණ්හාමි මහාජනං.

I practiced the ten courses of wholesome action without exception; with the four bases of sympathy, I cherished the great populace.

‘‘එවං මෙ අප්පමත්තස්ස, ඉධ ලොකෙ පරත්ථ ච;

දබ්බසෙනො උපගන්ත්වා, අච්ඡින්දන්තො පුරං මම.

While I was thus heedful regarding this world and the next, Dabbasena approached, intending to seize my city.

‘‘රාජූපජීවෙ [Pg.419] නිගමෙ, සබලට්ඨෙ සරට්ඨකෙ;

සබ්බං හත්ථගතං කත්වා, කාසුයා නිඛණී මමං.

Having brought into his hand my royal dependents, the townspeople, those with their armies and their provinces—all of it—he buried me in a pit.

‘‘අමච්චමණ්ඩලං රජ්ජං, ඵීතං අන්තෙපුරං මම;

අච්ඡින්දිත්වාන ගහිතං, පියං පුත්තංව පස්සහං;

My circle of ministers, the kingdom, and my prosperous inner palace were snatched away and seized; yet I looked upon him who took them as upon a beloved son.

මෙත්තාය මෙ සමො නත්ථි, එසා මෙ මෙත්තාපාරමී’’ති.

There is no one equal to me in loving-kindness; this is my perfection of loving-kindness.

එකරාජචරියං චුද්දසමං.

The fourteenth is the Conduct of King Ekarāja.

‘‘සුසානෙ සෙය්‍යං කප්පෙමි, ඡවට්ඨිකං උපනිධායහං;

ගාමණ්ඩලා උපාගන්ත්වා, රූපං දස්සෙන්තිනප්පකං.

I make my bed in a charnel ground, using a human skull for a pillow. Village children approach and perform many unseemly acts.

‘‘අපරෙ ගන්ධමාලඤ්ච, භොජනං විවිධං බහුං;

උපායනානූපනෙන්ති, හට්ඨා සංවිග්ගමානසා.

Others, with joyful minds stirred by a sense of spiritual urgency, bring perfumes and garlands, much food of various kinds, and other gifts.

‘‘යෙ මෙ දුක්ඛං උපහරන්ති, යෙ ච දෙන්ති සුඛං මම;

සබ්බෙසං සමකො හොමි, දයා කොපො න විජ්ජති.

Towards those who inflict suffering on me and those who give me happiness, I am the same towards all; affection and anger are not to be found.

‘‘සුඛදුක්ඛෙ තුලාභූතො, යසෙසු අයසෙසු ච;

සබ්බත්ථ සමකො හොමි, එසා මෙ උපෙක්ඛාපාරමී’’ති.

Balanced in happiness and suffering, in fame and disgrace, I am the same in all circumstances: this is my perfection of equanimity.

මහාලොමහංසචරියං පන්නරසමං.

The fifteenth is the Conduct of Mahālomahaṃsa.

යුධඤ්ජයවග්ගො තතියො.

The Yudhañjaya Chapter, the Third.

තස්සුද්දානං –

The summary thereof:

යුධඤ්ජයො සොමනස්සො, අයොඝරභිසෙන ච;

සොණනන්දො මූගපක්ඛො, කපිරාජා සච්චසව්හයො.

Yudhañjaya, Somanassa, Ayoghara, and Bhisa; Soṇananda, Mūgapakkha, the Monkey King, and Saccasavhaya.

වට්ටකො මච්ඡරාජා ච, කණ්හදීපායනො ඉසි;

සුතසොමො පුන ආසිං, සාමො ච එකරාජහු;

උපෙක්ඛාපාරමී ආසි, ඉති වුත්ථං මහෙසිනා.

The Quail King, the Fish King, and the ascetic Kaṇhadīpāyana; again, I was Sutasoma, Sāma, and King Ekarāja; I was also he of the perfection of equanimity. Thus was the conduct practiced by the Great Seeker.

එවං [Pg.420] බහුබ්බිධං දුක්ඛං, සම්පත්තී ච බහුබ්බිධා ;

භවාභවෙ අනුභවිත්වා, පත්තො සම්බොධිමුත්තමං.

Thus, having experienced manifold suffering and manifold prosperity in various existences, I attained the supreme enlightenment.

දත්වා දාතබ්බකං දානං, සීලං පූරෙත්වා අසෙසතො;

නෙක්ඛම්මෙ පාරමිං ගන්ත්වා, පත්තො සම්බොධිමුත්තමං.

Having given the gifts that should be given, having fulfilled virtue completely, having reached the perfection of renunciation, I attained the supreme enlightenment.

පණ්ඩිතෙ පරිපුච්ඡිත්වා, වීරියං කත්වාන මුත්තමං;

ඛන්තියා පාරමිං ගන්ත්වා, පත්තො සම්බොධිමුත්තමං.

Having inquired of the wise, having made the utmost effort, having reached the perfection of patience, I attained the supreme enlightenment.

කත්වා දළ්හමධිට්ඨානං, සච්චවාචානුරක්ඛිය;

මෙත්තාය පාරමිං ගන්ත්වා, පත්තො සම්බොධිමුත්තමං.

Having made a firm resolution, having protected truthful speech, having reached the perfection of loving-kindness, I attained the supreme enlightenment.

ලාභාලාභෙ යසායසෙ, සම්මානනාවමානනෙ;

සබ්බත්ථ සමකො හුත්වා, පත්තො සම්බොධිමුත්තමං.

In gain and loss, fame and disgrace, honor and dishonor—having become the same in all circumstances, I attained the supreme enlightenment.

කොසජ්ජං භයතො දිස්වා, වීරියාරම්භඤ්ච ඛෙමතො;

ආරද්ධවීරියා හොථ, එසා බුද්ධානුසාසනී.

Seeing indolence as a danger and the undertaking of energy as safety, be of aroused energy. This is the instruction of the Buddhas.

විවාදං භයතො දිස්වා, අවිවාදඤ්ච ඛෙමතො;

සමග්ගා සඛිලා හොථ, එසා බුද්ධානුසාසනී.

Seeing dispute as a danger and non-dispute as safety, be harmonious and of gentle speech. This is the instruction of the Buddhas.

පමාදං භයතො දිස්වා, අප්පමාදඤ්ච ඛෙමතො;

භාවෙථට්ඨඞ්ගිකං මග්ගං, එසා බුද්ධානුසාසනී.

Seeing heedlessness as a danger and heedfulness as safety, develop the Eightfold Path. This is the instruction of the Buddhas.

ඉත්ථං සුදං භගවා අත්තනො පුබ්බචරියං සම්භාවයමානො බුද්ධාපදානියං නාම ධම්මපරියායං අභාසිත්ථාති.

Thus the Blessed One, making manifest his own former conduct, delivered this Dhamma discourse named the Buddhāpadāna.

චරියාපිටකං නිට්ඨිතං.
